Udupi: State environment committee visits UPCL, to submit detailed report

Udupi, Nov 4: A three-member expert committee of Dinesh Kumar Alva, Ajith Gunzar and M V Sheshan, from Karnataka State Environment Appellate Authority visited the thermal project, Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL), located at Yellur on Friday, November 4.

The committee visited the place based on an appeal submitted by Nandikoor villagers in 2011. After five long years, the committee members came at the thermal project and are going to submit a report to the government after this visit.

The committee members inspected the office and then visited affected areas and houses.

A-56-year-old unmarried Vimala, a villager of Yellur shared her grievances with the committee members. She informed that she had grown jasmine flowers and coconut in her land for livelihood which were destroyed by ash from the power plant.

Vimala’s niece lost her life at a young age due to cancer. Now Vimala is unable to walk due to leg pain and is suffering from illness. Her brother, who is taking care of her, has now shifted his house to outskirts of the city.

Committee found that water in wells of nearby houses was contaminated owing to excessive ash emitted from the thermal plant.

Court hearing has been taking place every month at Karnataka State Environment Appellate Authority. The committee members will submit a detailed report to the court.

A public hearing will be held on Thursday, November 10 at Paniyuru to raise public opinion regarding the expansion of thermal plant.

Jayanth Bhat, vice president of Mudarangady panchayat has strongly opposed the expansion of thermal plant while David D’Souza the president is in favour of this project.

UPCL executive director Kishore Alva was present during the visit.

    First of all jayanth bhat is yellour panchayat vice president not mudarangadi.Davide is backing from current MLA so it is very simple they need money. Why public hearing at paniyur why?? Project at near nadikur and paniyur is nothing to do this project there is also golmal.

    100% there will be no any stop in work. But the committee which formed in 2011 need to show some reports to show that they worked something they are playing these political gimmicks.
    If these meeting held near Nandikuru or Mudrangadi locals will gather and there might be a big problem So these intelligent committee called few opposition local leader and try to compromise to shut their mouth for some years... (following east India Company's Policy). So both side will be happy for some time. Who cares poor locals..? every one interested in filling their pockets.

    It is nothing but a political Drama to keep peoples silent for a while mean time the work will going to continue inside plant. While peoples come out from hypnosis game will be over & once again poor farmers and poor peoples will be under loss..

    If UPCL and some political leaders care claiming its nature friendly..Why the high ranked officials travelling every day up & down from to UDUPI, Mangalore...why cant they stay in quarters inside the UPCL compound.!!

    Outcome will be decided based on CSR funding to the authorites by UPCL!!!. A local newspaper from Manipal regularly publishes news of this plant showing as if the plant is the best in the world!!!. EAlier when this plant was approved and people objected, DK & Udupi were subjected to extreme power cuts to show that this plant is absolutely necessary! . Last year a drama was made by UPCL and local politicians that Udupi will get 24 hours power supply!!!. NOw again people are opposing the expansion and Udupi once again is subjected to severe power cuts!!!. Strange thing people dont ubderstand that Udupi and DK require only 100 MW of power and plant is now producing 1200MW! Then for whom thay want to install 1600MW more and raise total to 2800MW!? BY killing people and sensitive coastal environment! ?
