Bengaluru: Few people trying to politicise Tipu Jayanti- Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Nov 7 (PTI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday November 6 said some people are trying to politicise Tipu Jayanti celebrations and disturb peace, as he directed the police to take strict measures to maintain law and order.

He had convened a meeting of senior police and Home Department officials to discuss about the law and order maintenance in the wake of Tipu Jayanti on November 10.

The Congress government's decision to observe the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, 18th century ruler of erstwhile Mysuru kingdom, has stirred a major row, with opinion sharply divided among intellectuals, academia and various communities and organisations, which have differing views on his reign.

BJP and RSS have been strongly opposing the event, being celebrated since last year, which had triggered a major row and caused violence in Madikeri and parts of coastal districts in November last year.

"Few people are trying to politicise Tipu Jayanti. They are trying to take political mileage out of it, and are also trying to disturb peace in the society. Such forces should not be given any opportunity," the Chief Minister's office said quoting Siddaramaiah.

The Chief Minister, who took stock of measures taken by the police department, has asked them to maintain law and order "efficiently".

Asking police to arrest anti-social elements as a precautionary measure, he told them to maintain strict vigil on those involving in instigation and provocations.

Also directing Deputy Commissioners of the districts to be present at their respective headquarters during the Jayanti, Siddaramaiah asked senior police officials to monitor bandobust by being present on the spot.

Tipu Jayanti celebrations have been opposed by various communities in several parts of the state like Kodagu, Chitradurga, coastal districts, alleging that their community had faced "atrocities and hardships" during his reign.

The issue of Tipu jayanti had even reached the High Court, which on November 3 had disposed a PIL challenging celebration by the state government, but directed the petitioner to make a representation to the state Chief Secretary to consider the objections raised against the event and pass an order by November 8.

The order by a two-member division bench headed by Chief Justice Subrho Kamal Mukherjee had come a day after it questioned the government on the logic behind celebrating Tipu Jayanti observing that he wasn't a freedom fighter, but a monarch who fought to safeguard his interests.

BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa has said that the party will hold state wide agitation on November 8 against Tipu Jayanti celebrations and killing of party and Sangh parivar activists in the state.

CM Siddaramaiah is driving last nail on the coffin of Congress. He may have taken a pledge to this effect while defecting from Janatha Dal. Loyal congressmen who built up the party brick by brick are looking around in disbelief when an outsider is engaged in the job of discrete demolition. Let us wish him the best.....!

    @ SMR,
BJP is not celebrating Shivaji Jayanthi. Only Shiv Sena celebrates Shivaji Jayanthi since they consider him as their hero or role model. Likewise let celebration of Tipu Jayanthi be restricted to Congress only if they consider Tipu as their patron saint.

Congress should have used the golden opportunity to rule Karnataka forever.

There was absolutely unnecessary to make people disgust with controversial issues.

When public oppose and some are murdered in the last year celebration, even cruel TIPU would have come out of his grave and requested the government to stop his birthday.

Who gave scope for all and sundry to politicize the issue Mr Siddaramaiah? All communities are at peace without having to celebrate any jayanthis. It is politicians like you who are driving a wedge amongst communities.

You say Tipu Jayanthi.. .tomorrow someone else will say Godse Jayanthi... and someone else will ask for Aurangazeb Jayanthi.... If this continues, we may have to come up with a Jayathi Calendar for our state very soon!

Tippu Jayanti is very much needed and we all should support it. Its the pride of we kannadigas and pride of Srirangapatana. Amazingly the Srirangapatana Temple is in same premisis as the Fort. Which itself is an example of peace and friendship. Also the name of the jayanti should be titled to Srirangapattana, as the whole episode is beyond Tippu Sultan and his contrubution.

He was a Muslim King, but see his minsiters which included mostly from Hindus, this is similar to Shivaji whos ministers were Muslims.

When such a friendship and trust prevaled those days, then why things are being showcased in wrongway now.

Every powerfull ruler in thier term have abused thier power for safeguarding thier interest. We dont deny his role in uting the local during that time, but as we hear that was due to them partnering britishes like how Maratas and Nizams to overpower his rule.

We should look at the fact than falling for fabricated propoganda by few parties.

There are many who opposed Gandhi and there are many who did more than Gandhi for freedom of India. It is the congis for vote bank and to get the surname of Ghandi for Nehru families which still Amul baby is banking on.

Some people may be politicizing the Tipu Jayanthi, but you have communalized it to appease a particular community. All know Tipu was a controversial figure in history. This is a classic example of appeasement. Let Congress adopt Tipu as the party’s patron saint and let the celebration be limited to the party only just as Shivaji Jayanthi is celebrated by the Shiv Sena.

Mr. Sudarshan, Ganjimut. Please release your delusion that it is 'my' Congress. It does not matter to me whether it is the Congress or the BJP because I feel they are hand in glove with each other. Each one is worse than the other. Just as the faulty policies of the Congress have resulted in our country remaining backward, the policies of the BJP have divided people on the basis of religion and caste. These politicians are not for anyone - they are for themselves. I wish to draw your and the others' attention to what Mr. Nani Palkhiwala said.

But what is the justification for you to organise this? Why do you have to follow the footsteps of your opponents? It is very clear that this is being done to please members of Tippu's community.
