Puttur: Siblings die in car-bike collision near Uppinangady

Puttur, Nov 7: In a tragic incident, two siblings died in a collision between a car and a bike at Bedrodi near Uppinangady here on Monday November 7.

The deceased have been identified as Akshata (25) and her brother Shivananda (19), residents of Neerapade in Balthila village in Bantwal.

Akshata and Shivananda were riding by bike to Golithottu to attend a function at a relative's house. When they reached Bedrodi, a Wagon R collided with their bike, killing the siblings.

The impact of the collision was such that both the vehicles veered off the road and toppled.

Car occupants Shivayya, Kamalamma, Harsh, Shubhasri and Sarvamangala, all from Hassan, sustained injuries.

Deceased Shivananda was pursuing PUC in a college in Bantwal.

    Accidents, Collisions and deaths are increasing day by day. May be due to speed and reckless driving these incidents tragedies happen. Youth should be more careful while driving. Anyway RIP.

    As pointed out by pks, mlr, drivers in the age-group of 19 to 26 yrs are reckless.

    Young drivers get into accidents far more than older drivers.

    If you want to hire a car/taxi, always look for a driver who is 40 and above. He will be cautious on the roads and you have a good chance of arriving at the destination in one piece.

    The young drivers want to get from point a to point b in a matter of minutes. They have absolutely no patience.

    In the recent past almost all accidents in the twin districts that killed people had young people driving the vehicles.

    And it does not help that, when it comes to road rules and caution, the passengers are more ignorant than the drivers!

    The passengers just do not seem to know that they can force the driver to slow down and drive cautiously.

    I am not referring to this particular incident. However, it has been widely noticed that, in spite of the rule, some carry their helmet in their left hand, some wear it but off the head, some for the sake of wearing they use safety helmets (white / yellow) which are used in construction / or any other infrastructure industries for protecting fall objects, which will not serve any purpose while riding a bike. There is no standard issued by Road Transport Authorities for helmets.

    for your second question about speed breakers installation - Simply installing a speed breaker is not sufficient, they should be painted with reflective paint so that, it is visible from a distance and driver / rider can bring down his speed to control the vehicle. Some speed breakers appear overnight and without any sign. A sign post indicating speed breaker ahead should be in place at least 50 to 100 meters distance. Some drivers from other cities will not know of speed breakers existence until they reach to spot. Some speed breakers are to short and it is very difficult for two wheeler and auto drivers.

    In a nutshell, anything may it be helmet or speed breaker is useless unless it is properly placed.

    PARENTS: how many more deaths of young children will you need as proof that motorbikes are as deadly as guns? Protect your children, its your duty. Don't buy them motorbikes.

    Bro... of course it is sad incident. But don't blame motor bikes for this. Any bike or vehicle is not produced to kill people. It is means of transport not a killer machine.

    The driver/rider should understand the value of life of his fellow riders/passenger & take care of them. Driving/Riding recklessly has become a fashion now a days. That should be changed.

    from some relevant articles on the net on motorcycle safety:

    "Motorcyclists were 34 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a crash in 2004, per vehicle mile traveled."

    "For example, approximately 80 percent of reported motorcycle crashes result in injury or death a comparable figure for automobiles is about 20 percent."

    and this 80% happens to be youth in the range of 18 - 25 year olds.
    and the saddest part is that most of the time the deceased happen to be the only child or the only son or the only daughter. Why not the Parents act sooner than cry later.

    Motorcycles stand no chance against other 4 or more wheeled vehicles on the roads and add to that a murderous driver at the steering wheel, the young and immature motorcycle rider has no chance at all.

    Traffic Police have a standard answer , " We don't have enough staff"

    But if Politicians or Celebrities 's visit, we can see hundreds of Police staff besides the road.

    May be imported from Mars?

    Frustration and anger can be understood here, but poor traffic police can not do magic here,or people will really care wat ever controlling signal have been put.
    first people need patience while driving,if driven carefully with limited speed many accidents can be avoided, one thing can not understand why people always in urgency? can we wait for a while or give way to to other vehicle?,

    I do not think, traffic police or anyone can stop these accidents. We all must put a break to over-speeding. Most of these are due to losing control over the vehicles. Only the driver can control these.

    Speed chokers and cruise controls may help us in this regards.
