Udupi: 96-year-old man dies while standing in queue to exchange notes

Udupi, Nov 12: An old man died at Ajekar here on Saturday November 12, while he was standing in a bank queue to exchange old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

Gopala Shetty (96) is the person deceased. He is the father of Sudhakar Shetty the founder of Jnanasudha Education Institutions in Karkala.

Gopala Shetty had gone to Corporation Bank Ajekar branch to exchange old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations. The queue was big and he could not bear the heat. He experienced high blood pressure due to this, collapsed and breathed his last while being taken to hospital.

Gopala Shetty was a known agriculturist in the area. He is survived by three sons and a daughter.

    This is not the India that I remember. You cannot blame Mr Modi for this. 30 years ago such an elderly man would have been given preference at the head of the line. Now people are likely to push him over to the side or trampled in the rush. Very few care. Indians have wanted to be like the Westerners in the USA and UK. Well now you are.

    Abruptly implementing order for exchanging notes without making proper arrangements has lead to this complication. Now too the arrangements are proper. Why sufficient quantity of new notes supplied for exchange. This is the big blunder due to which few people (aged) died due standing on Q for hours together.

    Feel like laughing for your comments, in my case I will wait in line for week of month as aadar is my identity. If the government wish this can be converted to your driving licence, voter card, ration card and many more.

    Is it 96 years is right age to do any work..?? At these age people difficult to get up from bed and stand straight. How can family members allowed these respected gentleman to stand in Q. After all money is not everything even health counts. People who died mostly are up above 70.

    There is no common sense in bank employees, they could do two lines for adult and senior citizens if they can not consider to senior and disabled citizens as priority,even bank employees not helping them out to write the form , they have pay other person to fill the form...they are not human ...employee might educated but what about their parents, so why they can not consider that...even managers can not communicate as they are transfers from south to north n north to south...no common sense, sake of employment and salary working...no humanity...no greetings...greeting only for rich people....

    It is Shettys fault. He has extended family at home. But he don't trust them. RIP...
