Bengaluru: 'Mastigudi' director, two others surrender to police

Bengaluru, Nov 13: In connection with the tragedy during the shooting of a scene at Tippagondanahalli reservoir for Kannada movie, 'Mastigudi', in which two actors and a bystander lost their lives, director of the film, Nagashekhar, action director, Ravivarma, and assistant director, Siddu, surrendered in Magadi police station here on Saturday November 12. They were thereafter produced in the court upon which they were remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

The trio was accompanied by leading actor of the movie, Duniya Vijay, when they surrendered in the police station. Police circle inspector, Anil Kumar, questioned them for about four hours in his office. The three accused were then taken to the government hospital at Magadi where they underwent medical examination.

The three persons, who have been accused of negligence when putting the lives of the actors concerned to risk when asking them to perform the stunt, were produced before additional civil judge, Rekha. The judge ordered them to be placed in judicial custody for 14 days till November 25.

Sources said that the police also questioned Duniya Vijay separately relating to the above accident, which is said to be the first one in the history of Sandalwood to have accounted for lives of actors. The general opinion emerging from the people as well as other people related to movies is that the team of the movie failed to take enough measures to ensure safety of the artistes.

    The film industry is thrivig at the cost of low paid artists, stunt men. The producer and Directors earn millions exposing poor side actors at risk. Even there are no rules and regulations to control the risk and in case of risk may there is no risk cover.
    There should be minimum payment standrads to dance artists, assistants, helpers
    There should be adequate insurance cover
    There should enough saferty measures especially during the action and stunt scences
    In this case, may be producer director and team more involved themselves in getting helicopter on hourly basis as the cost of getting helicopter could be very high and each hour delay will cost them too high rent
    In the process, they completely ignored safety of their artists
    It is high time, there must be a safety officer and his team during the entire film shooting and that must be made compulsory as in hollywood.
    This will create thousands of new jobs and the producers can easily afford such cost to minimize risk and share huge responsibility
