Udupi: UPCL expansion plan - Public hearing stage managed - Balakrishna Shetty

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RJP)

Udupi, Nov 13:  Balakrishna Shetty an environment activist from Yellur, presently based in Dubai, has demanded that deputy commissioner of Udupi district should be replaced in a letter written to chief secretary of Karnataka government for 'loss of trust'. He has also said that public hearing relating to the UPCL expansion plan was stage managed.

The letter addressed to the chief secretary says that Udupi deputy commissioner needs to be replaced for the reasons cited.

The reasons mentioned in the letter are as below:

Adani UPCL held a totally stage-managed public hearing on November 10 for their proposed expansion of the Udupi Power Project by addition of 1600 MW to the existing 1200 MW to achieve final capacity of 2800 MW.

The public hearing was held when the prohibitory orders were in force with section 144 imposed in the area.

The local MLA Sorake made fervent requests to the deputy commissioner to postpone the public hearing as section 144 was in force but surprisingly deputy commissioner refused oblige.

Bus loads of people in thousands including hired goons were brought by the industry from Mangaluru and other far away cities and the locals and affected persons were not able to attend.

NEERI who prepared the environmental impact assessment of the project were not present.

The hired crowd kept praising the industry for their generous CSR all through whereas the impact and measures to mitigate the impacts were not debated or discussed.

Most shockingly the deputy commissioner himself along with the well taught hired crowd obstructed and stopped those who opposed the project expansion clearly proving the deputy commissioner's personal interest.

In addition to citing above reasons, Shetty also says “I hold video clippings proving all my allegations and can present them to you any time you require.”

The letter concludes with the request “In view of the above, I humbly request you to take away the present deputy commissioner from Udupi and replace him with a honest, responsible and committed deputy commissioner as the present deputy commissioner lost the peoples' trust and is therefore unfit to continue.”

People like Shetty, ,and others think that India should remain as a country still shrouded in poverty and darkness. Probably these are the people whose property has been acquired by Government, they start comparing the compensations which they received with the present day compensations rates.Prices of property increase when devolpment take place in the surrounding areas. The price they have received was fair, but they feel they have lost. You can never satisfy a human being. Greed is unlimited. This is the reason why they always think and act negatively.

    1. It is a habitual approach of Shri Balakrishna Shetty and his companions to oppose any development in the district. Does he and his so called environmentalist friends want to have a DC who is a slave to their thinking?
    2. Being a Dubai based enterprener, what good Shri Balakrishna Shetty has done, to promote employment and development in Udupi Mangalore Districts?
3.If Balakrishna Shetty is a businessman in Dubai, how can he say that he is agriculturist? Who is farming his agricultural land?
4.It is UPCL has stage managed the public hearing, and get the people from surrounding areas, being a wealthy and rich businessman, even Balakrishna Shetty should have tried the same. Why he did not do it?
5.It is knwn to everyone that, entire programme has been videographed. How can Balakrishna Shetty say that it was stage managed?
6.Why local people are not supporting Balakrishna Shetty, if he is so much genuine?
    7. UPCL , after taken over by Adani Group, has been doing plenty of social work in the area. Is it wrongful for the public to express it in public hearing? Whether Shri Balakishna Shetty and his so called enviornmentalist friends have set any syllabus for public hearing?

What is Balakrishna Shetty's locus standi on this project? Is he MP or MLA or heck even a panchayat member? Sitting in Dubai and every six months whining about this project does not make him an environmentalist.

If we believed what Mr.Shetty scared us years ago by this time Udupi district should've turned a desert! But everyone in that area are doing their own things with no impact - mallige, coconut, paddy - everything is as usual.

Mr.Shetty should now come clean to tell on whose behalf he was pushing for expensive gas based plant vs cheaper coal based plant. Or at least he should explain why none of his dire predictions have not come true. We now get almost 24x7 electricity which was unheard of before. And everyone including agriculturists and fishermen are benefiting from it contrary to Mr.Shetty's scaremongering.

Rajanna, my locus standi is that of all other Indians. We are not only empowered by Constitution but it is our duty to protect ecology & environment. I am not seeking any title as you alleged. As for 24x7 power do you know what was coming from Jog & Varahi were diverted? Do you know solar power is clean and is now cheaper than the price of Upcl? Entire capital of solar plant gets paid up in 4 years? Upcl expansion will be the costliest in the entire nation - check with CEA and please take help to calculate. Go to google and find out the environmental conditions in Adani Mundra power project, how import invoices are inflated and funds siphoned to Mauritius. Read a book "A feast of the Vultures" that will teach you how dangerous this man is to the society

A stage has reached where even now the situation is such that the most beautiful pious tiny village taken desert look. In Mudarangady also many people have vacated the place
due to carbon problem. Childrens are
    suffering from various health problems.
Today people have become self centered that money has taken center stage. . . I know only Sri Balakrishna Shetty took all interest
to avert this anti people project single handedly.
