Rs 500/1,000 notes valid for key utility payments till Nov 24

New Delhi, Nov 14, PTI: With banks struggling to cope with rush to get alternative currency, the government has extended use of old defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees and purchases from co-operative stores till November 24.

While withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from the night of November 8-9, the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps for 72 hours.

This list was later expanded to include payments for metro rail tickets, highway and road toll, purchase of medicines on doctor prescription from the government and private pharmacies, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and ASI monument entry tickets.

As banks struggled to give alternate currency, the deadline was extended by another 72 hours. That deadline was to end at midnight tonight, but has now been extended till November 24, official sources said.

Old currency can also be used for purchases at consumer co-operative stores like Kendriya Bhandar with valid ID proof as also for paying court fee.

But payments towards utility bills will be restricted to only individuals or households for arrears and/or current bills. No advance payments will be allowed.

First, the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps for 72 hours. Now extended until November 24th. It wont be a surprise if the exchange of old note with the banks extended until 31/Jan.
because for a simple reason what all inconveniences will cause for common people, how difficulty is it for people to get it exchanged from banks, a nightmare for foreigners who are on visit.

I do respect the government call. While I accept the changes wholeheartedly, can anybody enlighten me why did not they abolish by serving atleast 30 days notice to avoid to chaos and put the things in place in systematic order with a meticulous planning.

Yes, if given time people would have purchased Gold & diamond ? definitely not properties. Is there a chance of foreign investment using cash? is there a chance to send money to foreign countries to make it balck to white? what would have been the worst scenarios? They would have monitored Jewelry sales making it compulsory with id proofs?

I see there are more than thousand villages where people have to walk miles for bank /post office. Foreigners are visit stop roaming around stand in 8 hrs bank Q JUST for basic requirements (food and water)

I request somebody clarify my doubt

Big pain for all common men in the country. Do you think the Ambani’s, Birla’s, Adani’s. Stand in long queue’s to exchange, withdraw, deposit money it is only the straight forward people who have to stand in long queue’s hour’s together. Do you think the LPG delivery men accept Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes, they will only accept Rs. 100. Whom does the common man complain if any of the people (business) who are mentioned in the article do not accept the Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes? Huge task for the common man at the end of the day.

There are so many (thousands) job less brigades why can't they use their service at all the Bank/ATM's to organize, filling the forms and assisting helpless old people to process the transactions and easy the burden. All are there to defend their leaders actions but in reality they too may be cursing their masters action. From the comments agree/disagree it is a commonsense to know how people are unhappy with this surgical action.

You can have your comments but what you would write after 2019?
No body is opposing but people who are subjected to oppression and difficulties do deserve to be punished.
Still the black money holders and politician are not subjected to any such harassment because they had a clue and were well prepared for the eventuality. BJP plans were good but the brainwork was not up to the mark, what should have been. Let us wait for ultimate damage, economic, business, people succumbing due to inconvenience and facing deaths due to starvation.
