Daijiworld Media Network - Chikkamagaluru (SP)

Chikkamagaluru, Nov 15: Four naxals who were active with naxal organizations including notorious leftist extremist, Neelaguli Padmanabha, who the anti naxal force and police were searching for long, gave up arms and surrendered before the district level committee for overseeing implementation of surrender/assimilation and rehabilitation policy for left wing extremists, near the office of the district deputy commissioner here on Monday November 14.

The proposal of the four for surrender would be sent to the state committee, and if that committee approves, these naxals will be able to join the mainstream.

Neelaguli Padmanabha from Koppa taluk in the district, Rizwana Begum alias Kalpana from Kortakunda village in Raichur taluk, Bharati, wife of Neelaguli Padmanabha, and Parashuram from Kalaburagi district are the four persons who surrendered. After the government announced its rehabilitation package for surrendered naxals in 2010, ten persons have surrendered till now.

The four naxals arrived at the office of the deputy commissioner, and announced in the presence of deputy commissioner, Satyavati, district superintendent of police, Annamalai, who happens to be the convener of the committee, member of the committee and zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr Ragapriya, that they were surrendering, duly shunning naxal ideologies, without any demand or conditions. The committee, which completed formalities for surrender, decided to send recommendation to the state committee about this proposal.

The naxals had arrived in the town along with Gouri Lankesh, member of the said committee, at around 2 pm on Monday. They then held discussions with senior advocate, A K Subbaiah, who happens to be a member of this committee, for sometime. The state government had announced prize of Rs 5 lac to those who find out the whereabouts of Neelaguli Padmanabha, Rs 2 lac in respect of Rizwana and Rs 1 lac for Bharati.

Neelaguli faces 19 cases in different police stations in Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, and some other police stations, for charges including murder, murder attempt, acquisition of illegal arms, fomenting disturbances etc. Rizwana faces cases of attacking the police, and creating trouble. Bharati and Parashuram do not have any cases pending against them.

Once the surrender process is completed, Neelaguli and Rizwana will be presented before the judge and taken into police custody while the other two will be released after the process, explained district superintendent of police, K Annamalai.

India times report "With intelligence and security machinery on their toes as per plan, the Naxalites will find it difficult to launder their cash dumps containing several hundred crores. They cannot transfer such substantial cash from secret locations in the forest, known only to top ranking cadres, and exchange them for new currency at banks."
