Mangaluru: Fish vendors give thumbs-up to Modi despite poor business

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 15: Even as thousands of people shout from rooftops condemning and criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's move to demonetise high currency notes, the fish vendors in Mangaluru, who are probably among the worst hit, have welcomed the move, despite the hardships they have had to face.

The fish market near State Bank wears a deserted look, with people busy lining up outside banks and ATMs, and moreover, not having enough change to buy fish. The market is usually busy with customers flocking in big numbers, but ever since Modi's announcement came like a bolt from the blue, the purchasing power has reduced and so also the crowds at the market.

Interestingly, though the fish business here has dropped drastically, it has failed to dampen the spirit of the fish vendors, most of whom are happy with demonetisation.

"We are unable to give back change to the customers when they pay us with Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for fish of lesser values. But despite the difficulties, we are thankful to Narendra Modi for taking this step," said one fisherwoman.

Another said, "Business has gone down in the last four days. People come with Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes but we are unable to accept them or return the change. We are facing similar difficulties at the fish harbour too, as suppliers too reject these notes. These problems will be there for a few days. People have to wait for hours outside banks to get Rs 2,000 notes and exchange old notes, so it is difficult for them also to pay for fish. Still, this is a very good step by Modi. It is true that there will be problems for a few days, but we are confident that this step will bring good days in future."

The women of the Mogaveera community may be going through hard days, but their strong support to PM Modi and unflinching hope that it would bring 'Achche Din' soon is indeed noteworthy!

    Dear Rajesh,

I am really touched by your intelligent comments which are not only informative than easy way of convincing people use Debit/Credit cards, credit purchase etc.
Let us hope things will improve and peoples difficulties would settle as early as possible. Next phase is reap the good results/fruits of the efforts exerted. So many guys or middle class families want to buy a decent flat or res. apartment but cannot dream of it because the black money is playing a nasty game on the actual cost and money supply. I wish all such deserving people to achieve their wish & goal in the near future.
    Jai Hind.

Let there be a debate on tax reforms and simplified taxes so that common man ( us) feels like giving the dues as a duty.

Current tax system is structured to force people to be dishonest.
Let this be a new beginning with demonetization being the first step.

    jeevan,
For all the patriotic people National first no doubt.
Curbing corruption & black money should be on a priority basis. In the meantime public sufferings and difficulties in the eventuality of the measure taken should have been considered before implementing such scheme. It could have been avoided to certain extent but the leaders were in a rush without realizing the repercussions of the pre-emptive or surgical strike. Same rule applies going for a war with our enemy. Now too late to cry over the spilled milk. Let us wait and see for outcome and good effects on Real Estate, Residential apartments and IT revenues. Also, Banks would have more deposits/cash flow and the offering interest rates should come down there by availing investment loans would be on lower side. Citizens should benefit.
At any cost there should be another counter strike on Rs. 2,000 notes immediately on curbing black money.

yes, public impacted to some extent. But do you think any change ( such a massive change ) is feasible with out this much inconvenience also. I am sure it was a minimal impact compared to the drastic decision taken. When we expect our PM to do massive changes, change the country kind of... then we should be prepared to face such minimal inconvenience. Just think was there any way to ease the move with keeping this decision as such a secrecy. Nobody knew about it. So, it was a tough move and I am sure al the feasible options were taken care.

No body knew it ..really... can you vouch for it before god ..Even BJP leaders, Mulayam, Mayawati, Amma who are silent.

Before this scheme BJP was refusing to disclose party funds... Now it says, it has no black money... There is no fairness, while implementing this scheme... All big fishes have already transferred the money out of country under LRS scheme.... and the 20 crores jandhan accounts helped to convert the black in to white....Only gain is RBI/ banks got heavy cash... This will help the cash crunch created in the banks by heavy bad loans....

Dear Flavian, Bulk of Indians are very poor & illiterate. therefore to put accross the message of greater good in future is also very difficult. Therefore this government will be vulnerable to criticism. but i am sure they will come out unscathed. The opposition is eying the inconvenience to create a political wallet. they are hoping & praying for inconvenience to continue. People generally will be very happy with immediate benefits. That is why it is a bold gamble. During the transition period there will be huge problems which may be atleast for a couple of years. The real benefits will start when a robust banking sytem starts operating. The traders are not inclined to move immediately to a tracking sytem & pay taxes. however, with little nudge & incentivisation they will be forced to move. being an Accountant for many years i am pretty sure there will be huge benefits after the transition period. To ease out problem of immediate liquidity Rs. 2000 was brought in which i am sure will be removed in circulation from a few months from now. Remember since the scheme was meant to be secret large number of people were kept out of it. People have to face lote of difficulties at least next couple of months. i too agree the scheme could have been little better in the cash delevery part. Perhaps mobile ATMS could have been introduced. let us wait & watch how things pan out. My vote is for a radical change & yjis government is just doing that.

Hope u are aware of the black money turned in to white by using 20 crore jandhan accounts ...Also the amount remitted out of India under LRS scheme, after Modi came to power .. Under UPA the limit per person was 75,000 $ and after Modi came to power it was increased to 275,000 $...Does any one know, who are the beneficiaries, what is the total amount remitted out of India, and why Modi increased this limit after he came to power...
We are not hearing anything from Mulayam / Mayawati / Amma.... May be that they were aware of the scheme before hand ....
Dont you think that 20 crore jandhan bank accounts really screwed the scheme.

The fish vendors are great disciples of the great Economist PM Modi.

I do remember Beedi Samuel who was the local CPM taluk secretary one day saw him crying while then Minister K. R. Gowri was passing through in the huge Chevrolet car. When I asked him, why you cry, he replied wiping the tears ' I will not ride in such a car in my lifetime but when I see my leader riding in such a big car, I feel very emotional and happy. The vendors are very delightful watching the piloting of the Indian economy by their hero, even though their business is in trouble due to the currency crisis.

First of all, the question of surgical attack is real or feku, only military team knows. If there has been surgical attack, by Indian military against Pakistan, then why PM has to leak out. This shows, all he is doing only for his survival and publicity. That comes first for him. Then nation.

If our border is quiet now or situations is aggravating is the question all Indians should ask.

Time will tell the surgical attack on black money. Mallya's 1201 crores has been written off and when common man approaches the bank for loan extension period while there is default, then, banks shows no mercy. Is this is the surgical attack on black money.

Pappu follwers have the EGO mentality of opposing whatever present Government do for the benefit of the Nation.
Because Pappu fake surname family thinks India is their personal property and only they have the right to rule the country.
They looted enough since Independence, now let them come in the Q with the common citizen of India.
Just for publicity, Pappu went to Bank by a 75 Lakhs worth Car, with dozens of Body guards to withdraw Rs.4000.....what a joke.?

Daily wage earners are starving because of money problem, children, adults die for medical reasons, many disturbed women committed suicide, many heart attacks as no idea of what is going to happen for various reasons like marriage fixed, land sold, money to get or pay, India is a billion plus population country with most of them using ready cash not credit or debit or ATM cards, the new declaration came without proper planning to put the commoner to hell. Do you think black money will come out just because of banning 500 and 1000 notes after certain period, the black money holders might have planned by now to find solution to their money in their possession.
