Belagavi: Tanveer's issue likely to hog limelight at Session

Daijiworld Media Network - Belagavi (SP)

Belagavi, Nov 21: The 'Suvarna Soudha' here has been fully decked up to hold the ten-day session of both the houses of the state legislature being held here from Monday, November 21 onward. While the sessions held in the city are meant mainly to stand up to the aspirations of people from north Karnataka, education minister, Tanveer's issue is expected to take centre-stage as the chief minister has not buckled under pressure of the opposition to unseat him.

Unprecedented drought situation in most parts of the state, failure of the government in handling it in an effective manner, and Mahadayi river dispute are the other issues which are likely to come for detailed discussion here.

If issues like murder of leaders of pro-Hindu organizations, failure of the government to catch the culprits in these cases, and viewing of obscene content over phone by minister, Tanveer Sait, during Tipu Jayanti celebrations may lead the session on the wrong track, if the government is stubborn on its stand to support the minister. BJP in all likelihood, may try to disrupt the proceedings by sticking to its demand for Tanveer's scalp, as three of its own ministers had stepped down under pressure from opposition for similar reasons previously. If this issue is not addressed properly, the government and the main opposition may be at loggerheads on this controversial issue. It is said that the government, at the most, may agree to shift the minister from his current portfolio.

After the assembly and council sessions of the state began to be held here some years back every year, five sessions have been held so far. Two of them were held at KLE College campus while the other three were held at Suvarna Soudha. However, these sessions were not successful enough to address problems of north Karnataka. Every year, usually government and opposition fought on trivial issues and sacrificed main issues. The government may try to save Tanveer by saying that action if any would be taken based upon the report by cyber crime cell to which this issue has been referred to. It may also try to procure and present clean chit from this department in the house.

BJP is sure to force the government to face awkward situation by raising all the above issues and sticking to its demand for Tanveer's ouster. JD(S) too is preparing to project itself as a possible alternative to Congress and BJP in north Karnataka. Kumaraswamy has already set up his residence at Hubballi, and pledged to build a strong base for his party in north Karnataka.

The government may blame the central government for not coming to its rescue to handle drought situation, and accuse chief ministers of Maharashtra and Goa of non-cooperation in handling Mahadayi river dispute.

Although Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti is organizing 'Maha Melava' to coincide with the above sessions, the police are confident of handling the issue efficiently so that the sessions will go on smoothly. Possibly Siddaramaiah-led government is expected to come out with some special announcements as elections are not very far off.
