After lavish wedding of Reddy's daughter, I-T dept surveys service providers

Updated

Bengaluru, Nov 21 (PTI): The Income Tax department today conducted surveys on at least ten locations of high-end event management firms, catering and multi-media service providers who were engaged for the extravagant wedding of daughter of Karnataka's former BJP minister G Janardhan Reddy.

Officials said that taxmen visited seven locations here and three in Hyderabad of those event management companies which were given contracts to give a blockbuster look for the wedding of Bramhani last week here. Reddy is also a mining baron.

They said the department, after receiving reports of high spending for the event, initiated the action and is checking the account books, payment receipts and contract portfolios of these firms who specialise in creating special ambience and customised display for high-end spending clientele during their special events like weddings.

The firms include those providing special swiss tents, expensive cutlery, multi-cuisine food and pyrotechnic dealers who brought a lavish style to the event.

Under the survey action, tax sleuths visit business premises of the trader/operator and make analysis of the available stock and record it whereas under search operations both residential and business premises are visited by the taxman and seizure of cash and incriminating documents, if any, is effected.

Once the scrutiny of accounts and contract books is done, they said, further action of issuing notices to investigate tax evasion by both the contractor and the contractee will be undertaken.

The multi-crore wedding was in the spotlight recently for its sheer opulence and extravagance at a time when numerous people were facing a cash crunch and had to queue up outside banks and ATMs to withdraw their hard-earned money in the wake of the demonetisation of the two large currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.

The five-day extravaganza was held at the Palace grounds here with ceremonies held against the backdrop of lavish settings.

The mining baron's event presented almost a surreal picture as Bramhani entered into wedlock with Rajeev Reddy, a leading businessman's son from Andhra Pradesh, with rituals conducted by a battery of priests from the famous Tirumala temple.

The grandeur of the wedding was such that huge sets replicating Vijaya Vitthala temple of Hampi, the seat of the glorious erstwhile Vijayanagara empire, and Tirumala Tirupati temple were erected at the venue, along with the replica of the homes of both of bride and the groom.

The whole wedding function seemed a vulgar display of ( begotten ) wealth.

Gali Janardhana Reddy came from a very humble ( poor ) background. His father was a police constable in Bellary.

All the money spent on this extravaganza was from theft of Karnataka's iron ore from the mines in Bellary and Chitradurga.

The Income Tax department has slapped a penalty of Rs.57 crore on Congress leader and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi after he was unable to furnish documentary proof to back his claim of expenses. The department has rejected Singhvi's claim that a termite attack on the premises of his chartered accountant destroyed all records, said reports. The department has also raised doubts over the advocate's claim that he purchased laptops worth Rs 5 crore for his staff, which entitled him to 30 per cent depreciation.
The Income Tax department and the Commission, had earlier, added a sum over his d professional income of Rs. 91.95 crore over three years between 2010-11 to 2012-13 and slapped a penalty. The order was then stayed by the Rajasthan Court, said reports. The commission has also contended Singhvi's claim that he spent Rs 35.98 crore on purchase of solar panels for his company, Rishab Enterprises. According to reports, the Jodhpur Income Tax Commissioner also came across cash ranging between Rs.7 crore to Rs. 32 crore in Singhvi's account. The Congress leader said that it was meant to pay fees of his legal assitants.

Let us not forget that no one can escape from the sight of GOD...Ooper wala dekhtha hai.Are we prepared to stand before the ALMIGHTY GOD"S judgement, where there is no partiality. His judgement will be severe......God has given us this earthly life not one alone to enjoy but to share with others especially with those who are unfortunate.and those who cannot to repay for the good that we do.Our almighty God will reward when we do share with the less fortunate.

Drama for media headlines. It all will die down in a day or two.

If there was any serious attempt to curb corruption. People - politicians and babus, who were behind Belekeri iron ore illegal export should have behind bars by now. But, they are not. Neither the judiciary is serious about them neither the Govt. CBI is almost dead from a caged parrot.

All big talks of nationalism is great to hear, but when you scratch the top, all you get is rotten.

It is not fault of people who use the system for their personal gains, but the normal people who can be swayed so easily with some music they like. There will be lakhs of people standing when the same guy will contest in any forthcoming election.

Guild is clearly visible on his face. I hope IT sleuths will thoroughly scrutinize all the records to ascertain the expenses involved and mode of payments.
No body would spend so lavishly if the wealth was made out of sweat or genuine efforts. Easy money flows easily.
