Reddy wedding : Priests to in-laws, several under Income Tax scanner

Bengaluru, Nov 22 (TNN) : Days after former BJP minister and mining czar G Janardhana Reddy allegedly spent hundreds of crores on his daughter's wedding at Bangalore Palace, income tax sleuths are busy scanning his accounts.

Also under the scanner are his in-laws and event managers who were signed up for various wedding-related services. These include priests, security guards and pandal suppliers.

The I-T department on Monday slapped a three-page notice on Reddy seeking details of all the expenses, including the source of income for his showy attire during the wedding.

Tax officials inspected event managers at seven locations in Bengaluru and three in Hyderabad. Reddy's daughter's five-day wedding grabbed headlines for its ostentatious display of wealth: LCD-screen invitation cards, recreation of the Vijayanagara empire by erecting massive sets on the 35-acre wedding venue, and a list of of 50,000 guests. The wedding took place within days of PM Narendra Modi declaring a war on black money by outlawing the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

Tax department sources said: "We've been gathering information for the past two months. We waited for the wedding to get over and have now issued a notice to him under Section 135 A (5) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. He has been directed to reply before November 25."

The 15-question notice was served on Reddy at his residences in Ballari and Bengaluru . The notice contains a list of items against which Reddy has to enter the amount spent. The breakup must include the money spent on flowers and vegetables too. Tax sleuths have asked Reddy to submit the bills paid and contact numbers of the vendors.

Reddy is learnt to have said that he has spent Rs 35 crore on the wedding - a speck of the speculated Rs 200 crore-Rs 500 crore splurged on the wedding. However, reports said Reddy spent Rs 100 crore on his daughter Brahmini's bridal dress and jewellery , Rs 20 crore each on food and the palatial setting of the Vijayanagara empire. The mining baron is said to have spent about Rs 200 crore on the wedding. The I-T department has sought details of preand post-marriage functions, the number of guests, details of credit and debit card transactions, and the money spent on return gifts.

Under scanner

Priests, artistes, caterers, pandal-builders, flower decorators, light-and-sound system providers, entertainment and music coordinators, transportation and logistics providers, hotels (where guests were accommodated), security agency that provided bodyguards and bouncers, Palace Ground authorities for renting out space, photography and videography firms, wedding invitation designer and supplier, and stores that sold the wedding dress.

one more drama. Reddy would surely have known he will be raided after such a gala wedding, few days after Modiji's demonetization. So this is all well planned, coz if it happened before marriage then these babus will not get their share of pound of flesh. it dept will be in news for some time n then issue will die a slow death.
Let this issue continue & let Law tell us what they would do with this ex-minister, then we will believe in your system. This is just an eye wash to us common people.
What can IT dept do now, can we undo the wedding - NO, can you fine him -NO, because he is already ready to go to jail. Can you check how much more money he has - NO, because where were you before this to raid his houses.!!
in Kannada they say " Neenu Hodedha hagey maddu, nanu koogidha hagey madtheney " - Translation : you pretend you are beating me up & I pretend that I am crying..!!
    God Save us.!!

Two well known movie stars of Kerala were caught by the Income Tax Department, they had over Rs 120 crores wealth each. Big headlines, later on it was disappeared, nobody knows how much they have paid to the IT Department.

Likewise, as you have stated, this is another drama to bluff the people through the self-projection of PM Modi as an impartial and honest PM. Or, the party didn't get enough share of Reddy's looting of the iron ore business, thus to punish him legally.

IT dept. clearly known whoever has black money, where they kept, how they utilise. Though, they wanted to do the  surgical strike and entire India should be suffered. If these IT dept since 1961 promptly did their duty, this situation wont be seen now.

Daily one or the other rules really effects common people, causes imbalance in the country. My sincere question,
a business man how he opens up account with foreign banks & how he convert his/her black money into foreign currencies?
this logic does not aware by the IT dept so far? this is not their duty to control?
see the present situation, our money in the bank account cannot be withdrawn darely because of threat by the IT dept! what   foolishness it is.
50 days to wait entire atmosphere of the country will be changed!! is it possible in the short span of days? jaago Indian jaagoooore.

What ever happened and taking place following the marriage is worth praising but that should not disturb newly married couples honey-moon plans. Let them proceed as planned. I hope IT sleuths would not follow next destination. Please spare them for some time.

That's what I wished yesterday in my comments.
Full operation looks very positive and effective. Cheaters and manipulators should be caught and punished. Now many more would be caught and brought into the nets. Finally, some more black money will be traced.
IT officials should use their power and act diligently through the country and save the nation from such scrupulous criminals who are robbing our country.
