Udupi, Nov 23: The competition between private buses and the newly-introduced government-owned NURM buses took an ugly turn on Tuesday, November 22 when NURM bus conductor was assaulted by a private bus conductor and his people.

As per details, Vijaya G Naik works for NURM bus which was moving from Manipal to Udupi on the way to Alevoor. When the NURM bus reached MGM College at 4.50 pm in the evening on Tuesday, a private bus named AKMS, bearing registration number KA 20 AB 7777, came from the left side and blocked the NURM bus from taking passengers. When Vijaya G Naik got down, he was threatened, abused and assaulted by Shamir, the conductor of the AKMS bus. When the passengers objected and stopped the assault, Shamir ran away from the spot.

When the NURM bus reached the bus stand later, Shamir with another 4 persons came there and assaulted Vijaya G Naik and his colleague bus driver Ganesh Ganiga. Both injured were admitted to a hospital later. It is said that around 10 people came to the hospital and threatened the injured again saying they would face the consequences if they dared to complain to police.

Vijaya G Naik and Ganesh Ganiga have complained to Udupi city police station.

Shamir too got admitted to a hospital and has complained to the police that he was assaulted by Vijaya G Naik.

Ganesh Ganiga and Shamir have been discharged from hospital while Vijaya G Naik is still in hospital.

By keeping the interest of the senior citizens NURM service should be extended to all the areas.

I would request the Minister to add airconditioned bus routes with disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport with entry step or entry hand rails for embark/disembark all age group with easy.People are ready to pay extra for better service.

For the safety of passenger RTO immediately step in and suspend the bus permit with warning.

Right time to stop all private buses. Staff with good past records can be given jobs in NURM buses. Most of the NURM bus conductors are well behaved, while most of the private bus conductors use bad language even with ladies nad rude with elderly people.

Yes, our DAkshina Kannada is very very famouse for liquor lobby and bus owners lobby. Most of the bus drivers and conductors are behaving like GOONDAS. They are all experts in speaking bad (below the belt) languages. Police Dept and RTO should take strict action against these GOONDAS.

What is happening in these cities? No law and order? Put the culprits behind the bars who tries to break the law. C'mon these buggers don't have any other work apart from assaulting and threatening. Last time we heard private cab drivers were attacked at Airports/Rlwy stn. These people are not confident/bold enough to compete in business. The only thing they know is assault and threat. This case is similar to Reliance Jio v/s Other service providers. Rather than competing in business the only thing they know was ping/blocking calls coming from Jio. What rubbish? People need to grow up. Jai Hind

The private bus people feel they are a law unto themselves. This is very similar to the private taxi drivers opposing the entry of Ola taxis in Mangalore. The private bus fellows should be pulled up by the authorities and told in no uncertain terms that they cannot have their way at all times. Bring the guilty to book and allow the government bus personnel to do their job. Violence should never be tolerated at any cost.
