Madikeri, Nov 25: The 26th Codava National Day was celebrated with much fervour at Gandhi Maidan here on Thursday November 24.

The celebrations was held under the aegis of Codava National Council (CNC), which has been fighting for the fulfillment of several demands, including special recognition to Codava Land, for the past 26 years.

Codava men, women and children from various places took part in the event.

The celebrations began with a vibrant procession depicting the Codava culture, accompanied by the traditional 'dudikott pat'. The processions passed through the main streets of Madikeri, via General Thimmaiah circle and culminated at Gandhi Maidan.

Several cultural programmes entertained the gathering. Leaders who had contributed their might to the Codava welfare were remembered.

Senior media personality Deepak Thimmaiah was the guest of honour on the occasion.

During a meeting held after the programme, a 12-point Codava Declaration was passed urging grant of status to Coorg as a union territory (UT), special package to Codava land, autonomy to Codava land under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution and other demands.

UT status for what purpose ? What is the use of it ? Is it for the purpose of development like Bangalore & other cities. It will only lead to various problems. People love going to Coorg to enjoy the nature and its coolness. If it is given the UT status will this place remain the same ?

Making UT for a small community of people will not be feasible. If so, then Konkan Land for Konkanis, Bhatkal Land for Bhatkalis, Tulunadu for Tulu speaking will be asked for....Let us all be one for now

If Kodava wants UT then grant UT status to all other areas like Tulunadu aspiring for independence. Also grant UT status to vidarbha, Kongunadu, North Karnataka etc.

I fully agree that UT status will help the coorgi community . This is a very small community which has faught many wars, produced good sports person and also have a unique culture which can be nurtured only if they have a place of their own !!too many encroaching into Coorg is making it worse for them
