Udupi: Sale of expired medicines by ESI- pittance sanctioned as compensation

Udupi, Dec 10: In an incident reported from here, a person who was given expired medicines by Employees State Insurance (ESI) hospital here had suffered from after affects of consumption of these medicines for several years. As against his demand for compensation of Rs 1 lac, the court has sanctioned him only Rs 8,000, it is gathered. The aggrieved person has now been demanding for the dismissal of the erring doctor from employment.

Rajeevi Shetty, an employee of Manipal University, happens to be covered by ESI. Her husband, Thimmappa Shetty (46) suffers from diabetes and was getting treatment through ESI hospital at Manipal under the membership of his wife. His health had deteriorated after consuming certain medicines issued by ESI Hospital which were well past their expiry date.

After consuming these medicines, Thimmappa Shetty started to suffer from symptoms like dysentery, fever. nausea, body pain etc. Because he is suffering from diabetes, he continued to experience dysentery during the last four years. When approached, the dispensary at ESI hospital officials stated that when they issued the medicines, the medicines had not expired. Thereafter, he approached the consumers court demanding dismissal of the doctor concerned and compensation of Rs 1 lac.

The court has now granted him compensation only to the extent of Rs 8,000 including court and travel expenses. Shetty told media persons that he will continue the legal battle for justifiable amount of compensation and also seeking dismissal of the doctor concerned.
