Udupi: One arrested in Shirva Church case, act committed in drunken stupor

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Dec 12: Acting swiftly, the police on Monday December 12 arrested one person in connection to the breaking of St Antony statue at Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva.

The accused is Benedict D'Souza (57), a resident near Shirva Society.

A driver by profession, Benedict broke the statue in an drunken stupor, police sources said. His wife and daughter are staying abroad.

He was arrested near Bantakal bus stand on Monday evening.

It is said that on Sunday morning, he had a fight with some migrants from another state who were residing nearby. He came to the church to pray, and in a fit of frustration that his prayers were not being answered coupled with drunkenness, he is said to have tried switching the positions of St Antony and St Lawrence statues. In the process, the statue of St Antony fell off the pedestal and shattered, sources said.

On learning about his fight with the migrants, the police took Benedict into custody and during interrogation, he is said to have admitted to having broken the statue.

The statue of St Antony at the church was found shattered to pieces on Sunday December 11. Condemning the incident, the Shirva parish pastoral council on Monday called a meeting and gave a deadline of three days to the police to arrest the culprits, failing which a protest would be held on December 16. Following the incident, several political leaders and bishop Dr Gerald Lobo and other priests visited the church and urged for quick action in the case.

Udupi, Dec 12: Following the act of vandalism at Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva, by miscreants on Sunday December 12, politicians and various locals leaders visited the church to take stock of the situation.

Bishop of Udupi diocese Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes, chairman of minority commission M A Gafoor, Ronald Karkada, KPCC member Dinesh Puthran, Narasimha Murthy of Udupi town planning, Nagesh Kumar Udyavar, zilla panchyat member Wilson Rodrigues, ICYM Udupi diocese president Loyal D'Souza, Fr Mahesh D'Souza, Fr Canute Barboza, Sunil Kabral and president of Catholic Sabha, Shirva deanery Melwyn Aranha, and gram panchayat member Leena Mathias visited the church later in the day.

The parish pastoral council of Shirva Church has given a deadline of three days to the police to arrest the culprits, failing which, a protest would be held. A parish pastoral council meeting was held in the morning, wherein it was decided to give the police time until Thursday December 15 to arrest the culprits. If the police fail to do so by Thursday 15 evening, a huge protest would be held by the parishioners on Friday December 16 at 4 pm, the council said.

Among those who visited the spot were MLC Ivan D'Souza, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, Kaup MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLA Lalaji R Mendon, zilla panchayat member Wilson D’Souza, Palimar gram panchayat president Jeetendra Furtado and David D'Souza of Mudrangadi gram panchayat.

Speaking to media persons, Ivan D'Souza condemned the incident and demanded swift action from the police.

On Sunday night and Monday morning, around 50 parishioners held a minor protest demanding proper investigation into the matter.

District superintendent of police K T Balakrishna visited the place with circle inspector (Kaup) B J Halamurthy and Shirva police sub-inspector Lakshman.

As per the information available, all the 5 cameras installed at the entrance of the church were not working. Though Sunday is a busy day for the church, people are not normally seen in the church premises after lunch. The miscreants must have used this opportunity to commit the act, it is suspected.

The canine squad found out that the miscreants escaped from the side of the English medium school. The cameras installed at the school may provide some clues.

Meanwhile, Udupi district BJP president Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde has demanded stern action against the culprits.

I believe people have realized being realistic and don't get carried away by these politicians directions for their own benefits, this is a good example and resulted incident, where politicians and attention seeks should by and large learn lessons from and after eating their owns words, you may not see them at this place of incident, they would be waiting for other places which they can go to and get attention or try to create problems by giving diplomatically inflammatory statements for political mileage, time to give them a rest and ask them to do more social work , as they clain to be doing, and they don't let others who do as well

It is said “(1) Weak minded people – seek revenge, (2) Strong minded people – pardon, and (3) Wise people – ignore”. In this case, the person who committed crime fitted himself at place (1) and for seeking revenge against his so called neighbours, he went to the church to pray St. Anthony & St. Lawrence to teach his neighours a lesson but miracle did not happen. Consequently, his anger has aggravated and wanted to take revenge against the two Saints and with the influence of liquor that was consumed by him, he wanted to teach them a lesson went to the church to displace them from their positions and in the melee, he ped the statue of St. Anthony resulting mutilation in pieces. His intention was sheer personal and not political, religious and so on. While the law takes its own course, let us place ourselves which category we belong to i.e.,” weak, strong or wise”?

Benedict D'Souza, by his senseless act done in a 'drunken stupor', has brought untold embarrassment/disgrace, not only upon himself, but upon so many others.

The least he should do in repentance is to totally give up his slavery to "Bacchus"/drunkenness (commentators, pl. correct me, if I've got the term wrong), get the damaged statues replaced and, after completing his jail term, engage in the service of the church, for the rest of his life.

I was expecting the same. Police department have 100's of scapegoats in their list. In order to satisfy the congregation, they have found a innocent scapegoat which will put the public in peace for some time.

I have a straight forward question to the police. How come he alone can do this act of vandalism. If he had acted alone, how did he escape after the vandalism and statues have been broken?

I am not at all convinced his arrest. This is just an eye wash.

So they mite be released. In Karnataka thats all you can expect, Kaluburgis murderers are yet to be arrested, there are bigger & open cases still pending investigation.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, these cowardly, shameful act only strengthens our faith. We should condemn it. It is good to see many non-catholic too have condemned this senseless act. However, if we exaggerate the issue, the intention and efforts of evil people will be fulfilled. No doubt, the culprit should be caught and punished. Let the Police do their duty. God is very merciful. I am sure He will not punish the culprit, instead may change him from Saul to Paul. I am a born Roman Catholic. According to me, the statue is just a symbol. Worshiping statue is Idol worship. Many people kiss the statues, as if it has a life. Statue is nothing but mud. The statues should be placed out of reach of devotees. Placing statues as a symbol is acceptable. This is what I feel.

Dear all, please have patience whenever such incidents take place. Do not pass judgments before knowing the full story. If you have any information, share it with the police. Allow them to investigate and do a good job. Zilla Panchayat member Mr. Wilson D'Souza is a lawyer by profession. When the person is caught, the learned lawyer will take care of the procedures.

St.Anthony is capable of putting the statue back to where it belongs to. The person responsible for this might come forward on his own. It is very heartening to note that people of other Faiths have condemned the incident. The fact that the local MLA, Vinay Kumar Sorake, visited the site will give confidence to the people that the police will act and act very efficiently. In the meantime, let us pray for peace and peaceful Christmas season.
