Mangaluru, Dec 12: "When so many people are opposing the Yettinahole project and fighting to save the Netravati river, the government and the chief minister must listen to them and stop the Yettinahole project," said Ananda Swaroopa Guruji of Ganga Seva Mission, Varanasi.
He was speaking during a programme held to welcome the chariot as part of 'Pancha Teertha Sapta Kshetra Ratha Yatra' organised by Netravati Ulisi Horata Samiti, at Kadri here on Sunday December 12.
He said that he was ready to conduct a fast unto death at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to save River Netravati, which he described as the 'Ganges of Dakshina Kannada'.
"The chief minister should realise that no huge project should be carried out without taking people into confidence," he said.
Sri Bhattaracharya Swamiji of Moodbidri Jain Math said that even though the various districts of the state are like the various organs of a body, the government is still aiming to implement the project and create internal clashes.
MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary said that when Paramashivayya had submitted the project report, he mentioned that the annual rainfall in Daksnina Kannada was more than 6,000 ml. "When I received the statistics in the council, the figure was put at 3,000 ml. The officers and the government are following the same old statistics and are spilling the tax payers money for no reason. The government must become like Dharmaraya (one who gives) and not like Duryodhana (one who takes away)," he said.
Fr J B Crasta, KPCC member and president of DK and Udupi Muslim Central Committee Mohammed Masood also spoke on the occasion.
M P Nalin Kumar Kateel, Sharada Education Institutions chairman M B Puranik, DK district BJP president Sanjeeva Matandoor were present, among others.
