Karkala: Accused in 9 thefts including from temple held, valuables seized

Karkala, Dec 15: Police from here have arrested a person relating to various thefts from houses and also a temple.The arrested accused has been identified as Umanath Prabhu (47), son of the late Vasudeva Prabhu from Hosamane in Layila village of Beltangady taluk near Uppinangady, and currently residing in Miyyar village in the taluk. The arrest was made on Wednesday December 14.

134 grams of gold ornaments valued at around Rs 3,50,000, silver valuables worth Rs 25,000, Rs 11,000 in cash and a wrist watch were seized from the possession of the accused. They pertain to eight cases of theft from houses and one from a temple. It is learnt that Prabhu had been jailed earlier too relating to similar crime.

The operation was conducted under the direction of the local subdivision assistant superintendent of police, Dr Sumana D Panekar, by police circle inspector of the town, Joy Antony A, rural station police sub-inspector, Rafique M, town station sub-inspector, Ravi N N and other staff. Investigation was conducted on the basis of finger prints of the accused obtained relating to a case registered on December 4 at the rural police station here, and tracing the whereabouts by making inquiries at several places.

The accused was taken into custody from Mundkoor within rural police station limits here, and after interrogation, the above items were recovered. Prabhu had been jailed for a year in 2008 pertaining to a theft case relating to the year 2007, it is learnt.
