No liquor shops on national and state highways : Supreme Court

New Delhi, Dec 15 (Agencies) : The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered a ban on liquor sales on state highways across the country.

The apex court expressed its concern about the over 1.5 lakh fatalities every year in road mishaps.

Earlier on December 7, the apex court, while reserving verdict on a batch of pleas seeking a direction to amend excise laws to ensure that no liquor is sold alongside highways, came down heavily on the Punjab government for seeking relaxation and permitting liquor shops near highways if they are “elevated” ones and the vend are under or near it.

“Look at the number of licences you (Punjab) have given. Because the liquor lobby is so powerful, everyone is happy. The excise department is happy, the excise minister is happy and the state government is also happy that they are making money. If a person dies due to this, you give Rs one or 1.5 lakh. That is it. You should take a stand which is helpful for the society,” the bench headed by chief justice TS Thakur said.

Earlier, the court had sought the response from the Centre, states and Union territories on the pleas seeking a direction to amend excise laws to ensure that no liquor is sold alongside highways.

Not a good decision. Auntie's homemade liquor outlets will pop up along side of the Highways. Looks like we are going back to 1969 square one. Opportunity for the unemployed to start a water hole.

    Think before banning somethings.
Main reason for accidents on highways is not the liquor. It is the driver who is driving the vehicle.
So ban all drivers on national highways. Ask google to provide self driving vehicles!!

Highways (I have seen) don't have any patrolling by police. Though most fatal accidents happen there.
Instead I (everyone) see police checking at every corner (read blind spots!) in Mangalore.

    gm,

Our alcohol is not more powerful but over consumption makes guys off track and lose senses. Then as commonly understood Devil takes over in alcohol form. There should be a limit.
Some guys get drunk even by having 6 bottles of Beer and if knock out brand do not ask me.

Alcohol is the No.1 reason for all domestic fights, murders, rapes and road deaths in India. High time everyone considers this problem seriously. It is not a matter for jokes any more.

If the liquor shops those are on the highways are closed then people will make necessary arrangement to carry the liquor with them from any source and drink more while driving.

A man who wants a drink will get his drink no matter what. I bet if the Supreme court orders the liquor shops to be set up only on top of mountain... people who want to drink will hike that mountain and they will do it in any weather.

A bold and a very good move from Supreme Court to ban liquor shops from National and State Highways.

So many deaths and fatalities occur due to rash and drunk driving. With this ban, so many wives and children will be lucky to see their close family member till life long.

    Ban liquor?
Why all should be punished like the demonetization and cash crunch.
Liquor may be part of the cause for troubles but not all the problems are arising out of alcohol. Some people drink for relaxation and to cherish.

In my opinion Liquor supply can be regulated or can be reduced but cannot contain completely. This is history and the history repeats itself.

Also in my opinion children up 20 should not touch liquor if done so they will not be addicted to it or they do not feel to have the desire of it.

If alcohol is the root cause of road accidents, there is already a law prohibiting drunken driving which needs to be strictly enforced instead of banning bars and wine shops on highways. Why passengers and tourists be denied the choice of drinking because of irresponsible drivers?
