Puttur, Dec 16: In an incident which happened at Bollavu in Periyadka in Uppinangady village of the taluk on Thursday December 15, a woman committed suicide. It is gathered that her son's unexpected death at a young age turned too much for her to handle.

Ramachandra alias Ramesh (38), son of the late Thimmappa Gowda from Bollavu had tried to end his life by consuming poison on Wednesday, it is learnt. After finding him lying in critical condition in a shed near the family home, he was rushed to a private hospital at Puttur. The same night he passed away and efforts of the doctors to save him turned futile.

Ramachandra's mother, Sesamma, was with her son during the treatment. After the son's death, she visited Uppinangady police station at about 11.30 pm the same night and reportedly gave a statement that her son ended his life, having been fed up with daily quarrels with his wife on occupation-related issues. She went home thereafter and slept. Her daughter-in-law found at about 7.30 am on Thursday that Sesamma had consumed poison and her condition was very serious. With the help of neighbours, Sesamma was taken to a hospital at Puttur, but she died before reaching there.

Sesamma's daughter-in-law, Vasanti, thereafter filed a statement with Uppinangady police that Seasmma ended her life, having been distraught and distressed at the death of her son. Postmortem of both the bodies was conducted in the government hospital at Puttur, after which their funeral pyre was set side by side before cremating the bodies.

The locals say that Ramachandra was bothered by something since the last some days, and was found to be aloof most of the time. He worked as a mason, and reports say he was a liquor addict sometime back after which he got rid of this addiction and got fully involved with masonry and agriculture. Since the last week, he took to consumption of alcohol again. On Wednesday, he had taken leave, and had left his motor bike at the spot where his colleagues were working. It is said that he told his colleagues before leaving that it was his last bike ride. He then reached his home and committing suicide.

Vasanti works as a volunteer in a rural development organization, and the issue of work frequently happened to be the subject of contention between the couple. It is suspected that these differences had aggravated, as a result of which Ramachandra chose to end his life.
