Udupi, Dec 17: In a tragic incident, a young woman and her three-year-old child died after accidentally falling into a pond at a stone quarry in Horvarbettu near Saibrakatte here on Saturday December 17.

The deceased have been identified as Chandrika alias Kavita (28), wife of Veeresh, and their daughter Likhita (3).

The family hails from Bhadravati. Veeresh is a coolie worker employed in Saibrakatte.

Chandrika along with her two daughters had been to the stone quarry to wash laundry, when the incident took place.

The family has been staying in Saibrakatte for the past two or three years. Veeresh is working in the stone quarry at Kirady. On Saturday, while Veeresh was away at work, Chandrika, as was her routine, went to the nearby quarry pond with her two daughters to wash clothes.

Likhita and her sister were playing on the edge of the quarry pond, when the three-year-old accidentally slipped and fell into the water. Alarmed by the sight, Chandrika rushed to her daughter's rescue, but she too drowned.

Meanwhile, Chandrika's elder daughter Shilpa ran home and informed her aunt. The family members rushed to the spot but by then both mother and daughter had lost their lives.

Brahmavar police SI Madhu and other personnel arrived at the spot and registered a case.

The bodies were retrieved with the help of expert swimmer Manjunath from Shanakaranarayana.

Two key sentences, one from the reporter and another from a reader, are pointers to how this tragic episode will end up. "police arrived at the spot and registered a case" and "Pure accident- RIP".

The police case will be RIP. This is not the first time people, specially children, have died in such stone quarry ponds. The authorities have reacted by ordering fencing of such ponds. Where is the enforcement.

The rich would have dragged the abandoned quarry owner to court and secured compensation from the criminally negligent owner. But, the poor have to stoically accept RIP. There are enough sections in the criminal law which can be invoked to impose jail and compensatory fine.

But, who will fight for the poor? RIP all!
