Kundapur, Jan 8: A young married woman ended her life on Saturday January 7 by consuming poison, allegedly due to dowry harassment by her in-laws.

The deceased has been identified as Jyothi (26), wife of Umesh Poojary, son of Paddu Poojary, residents of Hanebachalu in Ajri under Shankaranarayana police limits here.

Jyothi, daughter of Krishna Poojary and Ratna Poojarthi of Balkur, tied the knot with Umesh Poojary about eight months ago in an arranged marriage. It is said that after marriage, Umesh went to Bengaluru to work in a hotel, while Jyothi stayed with Umesh's parents and siblings here.

It is alleged that in her husband's absence, the in-laws harassed Jyothi for dowry, and she revealed this to her parents when she visited them, sources said. Her parents consoled her saying things would get better, and sent her back to the in-laws' house. It is learnt that Jyothi had come to her parental house again a few days ago and stayed for two or three days.

However, as the matter turned worse, Jyothi was unable to bear the alleged harassment and decided to end her life on Saturday, it is said. She went to the fields on the pretext of spraying pesticides, and instead consumed posion, sources said.

Following her death, Jyothi's parents approached the Shankaranayarana police and filed a complaint.

The body was taken to Kundapur mortuary and post-mortem would be conducted on Sunday January 8, sources said.
