On March 25, 2012, Charu Khandal, her sister Ritu, and her sister’s fiancé’ Vikrant Goel were travelling in a rickshaw when a speeding Honda City rammed into their vehicle. The young animator suffered serious and multiple injuries on her head and spine and was left paralysed.
The trio was out to celebrate the National Award won by Charu's team for the special effects for Shah Rukh's superhero film Ra.One.

Having suffered multiple fractures and injuries, Charu spent 92 days at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital, 40 days in the ICU.
4 years after the incident, Charu became almost immobile and had sensation only in her neck and wrists.
