Mangaluru, Jan 25: "The new system of procuring ration cards has solved the trouble faced by common man," said minister for food and civil supplies U T Khader on Wednesday, January 25.

Addressing a press meet at the Circuit House here, Khader said, "The above the poverty line (APL) families in the state can easily get the APL ration cards. As many as 32,148 people have received the APL ration cards in the state, among whom 1,898 are from our district. All confusion regarding the APL cards and the tiring way of procuring them has now been eliminated. The applicants need to get a printout of their temporary APL ration card and can have the permanent card delivered to their door step within fifteen days.

"Looking at the requirements of common people, the state government has allowed the sale of white kerosene in open market. The government has issued an order in this regard. Those interested in selling white kerosene in open market can approach the deputy commissioner or the office of the food and civil supplies in their districts," he said.

"As promised by chief minister Siddaramaiah on August 15 last year, below poverty line (BPL) card holders who were earlier eligible to get only wheat and rice, will now get any of the pulses (dals) too. They will also get sunflower oil in addition to palm oil. The facility will be launched by CM on January 31. BPL card holders can get their ration from February 1," he informed.

"There are many families who find it difficult to visit fair price shops monthly to collect ration. Discussions are on for making a facility where people can collect their ration once in 2-3 months," he said.

"Kambala should be allowed"

"Kambala and Yakshagana are the two eyes of this district. We need to preserve and develop our culture. The state government has extended its full support for Kambala. We will pass an ordianace through the court if required," said Khader.

"Every region has a sport associated with it. The central government has to work on a bill where associations like PETA will not be given a chance to interfere in cultural sports. PETA should come down too Dakshina Kannada, watch Kambala and then think about asking for a ban on it. The centre should find a permanent soultion regarding this," he concluded.
