M'luru: Yakshagana Academy announces awards - Dr Joshi gets Parti Subba Award

Mangaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy has chosen well-known Yakshagana scholar, Dr M Prabhakar Joshi, for the prestigious Parti Subba award for the year 2016. Ten others with valuable contributions to the fields of Yakshagana and Bayalata have also been chosen for the annual honorary awards.

President of the academy, Nadoja Belagal Veeranna, addressing a press conference here on Friday, said that these awards will be presented at a function to be held at 5 pm on Saturday January 28 at Town Hall here.

Those chosen for the honorary awards are Subraya Venkatramana Bhat Gundibail Honnnavar (Badabadagutittu), Gopalakrishna Kurup Beltangady (Tenkutittu), Heranjal Subbanna Ganiga Kundapur (Badagutittu),Usharani Ballari (Bayalata), Tukaram Maruti Nayika Belagavi (Sannata), Vilasabai Mageppa Rayannavar Jamakhandi (Srikrishna Parijata), Chikkachoudayya Naik Mysuru (Moodalapaya), Narahari Shastri Bengaluru (puppetry), Ningappa Toranakatte Jagalur (Bayalata), and Srinivas Sasthan Bengaluru (Yakshagana).

The Parti Subba award comprises of cash component of one lac rupees, while the honoroary awards carry Rs 50,000 each along with citation, he stated. The awards function will be inaugurated by district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai. MLA, J R Lobo, will preside, while Keshavananda Bharati Swamiji of Yedaneeru Math will address the gathering, he stated. A procession of the awardees and troupes of artistes will be taken to the venue of the function from Sharavu temple.

Minister for Kannada and culture, Umashree, will hand over the awards. Minister, U T Khader, will release the book introducing the award winners. MLA, Shakuntala Shetty, will release the quarterly issue of 'Bayalata' magazine, he explained. Academy member, P KIshen Hegde, said that documentaries are being made by the academy on veteran Yakshagana artistes, Hiriyadka Gopal Rao, Kolyur Ramachandra Rao, Balipa Narayana Bhagawat, Petri Madhava Nayak and Leelavati Baipadithaya.

At 8.30 pm, Tenkutittu Yakshagana artistes will stage 'Jambavati Kalyana' episode.
