Bengaluru, Jan 28: Enthused by the success of Tamil Nadu’s popular upsurge in favour of legalising Jallikattu, Karnataka has decided to bring an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for conducting Kambala and bull cart races, traditional sports in the State.

The State Cabinet, which met with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presiding, on Saturday approved amendments to the Act and the Bill would be placed before both Houses of the State legislature, which would meet from February 6.

Briefing reporters on the decisions taken at the State Cabinet meeting, Karnataka’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra said the State Government has decided against promulgating an ordinance since the legislature would meet from February 6 for five days.

The Bill passed by the State legislature would require an assent of President Pranab Mukherjee.

Jayachandra said the State would follow the model of the Tamil Nadu government and bring changes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
