Mangaluru: Poet Nutan Sakhardande chosen for Kavita Trust's Mathias Family Poetry Award

Mangaluru, Feb 1: Renowned Konkani poet Nutan Sakhardande from Mapusa in Goa, has been chosen for Kavita Trust's Mathias Family Poetry Award for the year 2016. The award consists of Rs 25,000 cash prize, citation and a momento. The award, instituted by Kavita Trust, is given every year by Joseph Mathias, the managing director of Merit Freight Systems, in the name of his family.

The award will be presented during 'Kavita Sambhram' to be held on February 5 at Gallerie Orchid, KS Rao Road here at 4 pm. J R Lobo, MLA will confer the award. 'Rastya Degechim Fulam', a collection of poems by renowned poet M P Rodrigues will be released during the occasion and a poetry session will be held wherein V K Yadav, Wilson Kateel, Naveen Suratkal and Suresh Baliga will recite their poems.


Born in Marcela, Goa in December 1958, Nutan has been writing poems for the past 30 years. She has published two anthologies of poems 'Jinn Zali Kasturi' and 'Password' and has translated Odiya poet Pratibha Satpathi’s collection of poems 'Tanmaydhul' into Konkani. Nutan along with her friends has organized more than 100 poetry recital programmes in Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra under the banner 'Triveni'. She was the president of 16th All Goa Yuva Konkani Sahitya Sammelan held in 2014. Her poem 'Shennillo Ganv' has been translated and published into 18 languages of India. Her poems are being taught to high school and university students in Goa.

She has won numerous awards for her creative writing. Prominent among them are All India Poetess Conference, Khurja, UP and Dr TMA Pai Foundation Best Book award for 'Password' (20l1).

Mathias Family Poetry Award was instituted in the year 2008 and Nutan Sakhardande is the 9th recipient of this award.
