Udupi: Gang beats up youth talking to girl from another religion

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 2: Irked by the fact that a youth was speaking to a girl belonging to a religion that is different from his own, a gang launched deadly assault on him, leaving him badly injured and bruised. The incident occurred at St Mary Church at Shirva on the evening of Wednesday February 1 during the annual festival there.

A resident of Katapadi near here, identified as Chetan (21), was the victim of this incident. It is said that Chetan and a Muslim girl from his village are in love with each other since the last about two years. The family members of the girl, who came to know about the mutual love, took umbrage at this relation, and warned the girl against continuing with her affair with the youth, it is said. Still, the youngsters continued to meet each other.

The two came face to face at St Mary's feast at the church on Wednesday. Chetan was chatting with the girl and some of his friends when two youth suddenly assaulted him. Chetan responded by hitting back. Immediately, about 15 young men belonging to the girl's religion came together, dragged Chetan away, and launched murderous attack on him with rods, sharp wooden pieces etc, leaving him bleeding in the back of his head and entire body. They also kicked him around before dumping him near the giant wheel operating nearby, it is learnt.

The friends of Chetan, who remained mute witnesses to the ordeal of their friend, later took him to the district government hospital at Ajjarkad where he is being treated.

A case relating to this incident was registered in Shirva police station. Police are investigating the case.

Quite often in recent past, ... in our coastal Karnataka, we the secular thinking/mindset & intelligent people used to hear/read a news about Moral Policing by members belong to self proclaimed guardians of culture ...,

After reading this news report... can anybody enlighten... from whom these boys would have learned these kind of intolerant goon culture..., though I have no clue to believe one way or the other..,

After all we know that the apex court of Hindustan uphold that Hinduism is a way of life..., which means those who live in Hindustan their way of life should reflect the culture of true Hinduism.., which are "sarva Dharma Samabhava, vasudhaiva kutumbam & ahimsa paramo dharma".., individually we may follow different religious faith (that can be islam, christianity or hindu), but our living must reflect Hinduism..., there is no space for hatredness or intolerance...,

But regretfully that is not seen ..,

Mangalore and Udupi need both inter-caste and inter-religious marriages. That would need enlightenment and a need attiude in the districts. Marriage is not between persons of the same religion or caste or creed. Marriage is between two lovers, a boy and a girl, committed to each other. If people of different castes and communities marry there will be more communal harmony and amity. Let us stand by Chetan and his right to choose the person he desires to marry

From the report, Chethan is not doing anything illegal. Church cannot stop anyone from attending the feast at the church compound or the church itself. People from all religions are allowed to pray in or outside the church. And hence Chetan does not have to be a catholic to enter church or its premises. Also, what is Chetan's fault for speaking to a girl, regardless of her religion. As long as Chetan did not force the girl to speak to him, they should be fine. What those goons did is absolutely wrong. They all should be punished according to the law. Chetan and girls parents need to talk and sort this issue out. If girl's parents or family are the one's behind this assault then they should be punished as well. Time to be human. Keep your religion at home inside those four walls.

First point - Why chethan can't be a catholic?
Second point - If he is not catholic, what are you doing in shirva church?
Third point - No point, first answer the above two points to get the third.

Funny comments… I think there is a sub religion is developing in this erstwhile Dakshina Kannada in every religion that teaches to hate others... some of the comments are even before going through the news briefings, based on the religion of victims and attackers rather angle of offence. It doesn’t matter what is the definition of love in various Holy Books. All Scriptures in the different Holy Books are after love and humanity. I don’t think anyone’s religion has the teachings to hate others…

What we Mangaloreans have become. Why we have allowed hate to seep in our blood.
We really need a strong leader who throws into jail all leaders who give provocative and poisonous speeches irrespective of religious background.
    After all hatred begets hatred.

Dont follow the path of sanghi elements by attacking the boy.Rather guide the girl about strict quranic instruction about marriage.Any marriage takes place outside islam without accepting islam may be boy or girl is considered as an act of zina.If the girl hss any bit of eemaan she will abide by it otherwise nobody can stop them.If the girl still continue then she is disconnecting the relationship with almoghty by getting of from believing women

Dear, Amith, Why is double standard from you. You had supported BD goondas for beating muslim boy for eloping with hindu girl claiming that it is love jihad. In your opinion i think, it is correct if Hindu boy is in relation with Muslim girl and it is incorrect if a muslim boy loves hindu girl.

Love has no religion. Emotions can't be suppressed by muscle power. Money can't solve problems. I feel the Muslim girl who loves a hindu boy must be allowed to live together if they love each other. We cant suppress love. It's a eternal feeling. Love is not separated by religion caste regions or languages. It's a feeling and I if the boy and girl wants to live together let them live together. Let them live for love has no boundaries ad I am sure there are enough social workers who can help the couple. Love I again say is beyond boundaries of caste religious language region or money.
