Burqa-shawl row: Student assaulted in Shivamogga

Shivamogga, Feb 7 (DHNS): A group of students attacked a student when the latter refused to remove the saffron shawl on the corridors of the government degree college here on Monday.

According to the college authorities, Sharath, a first-year BBM student, stepped into the college around 9 am wearing saffron shawl in protest against girls wearing burqas in classrooms.

Noticing this, Muslim students of second year BBM asked him to remove the shawl. But Sharath refused to remove it and demanded that girls remove burqas in classrooms. This led to a tussle between them. The second-year students assaulted Sharath. Noticing this, a college staffer informed police, who rushed to the college and brought the situation under control. It is said Sharath sustained minor injuries.

Six students - Syed Ahmed, Faizullah Baig, Irshad, Sharath, Satish and Vinay - have been arrested in connection with the incident. But SP Abhinav Khare told DH that it was a minor fight and none was injured. Shivamogga police, on Sunday, registered suo motu cases against two youths for posting provocative messages and videos on WhatsApp pertaining to the controversy.

    I would rather say college management is responsible for students behavior. If management has served the notice with suspension in presence of parents with dire consequence of suspension examination student will never gone so far.

    Education institution should be future of this nation. Mixing politics with education is disaster waiting to be happen.

    I appreciate if college management to introduce uniforms for all genders. If Sikh want to pursue education let him ask to wear the colour which college decide. Let Muslim ladies who want to abide to the religious duty should cover the scarf of same colour with loose close rather than skimpy which exposes the curvature. If Hindus want shawls let them drap on on neck. But choice of colour should be neutral without any religious significance. When Indian armed forces can maintain discipline with religious duty and desh raksha why students can't do it?

    During Sabarimala campus has given provision to practice one's faith. In the past 'Raksha bandhan' gift were exchanged . Christmas and birthdays sweets are distributed. Why these stereotype from ABVP to divide students on religious basis ?

    Is this the message from PM Modi, who asked students in Mann Ki Baat radio programme in the new year, who prescribed “P for prepare and P for Play”, “deep breathing” and “adequate sleep” for students to relax themselves?
    Bringing religion into classroom is against ethics and student code of conduct.

    Wearing Burqa is better than wearing half skirt..Burqa was there in the past, Burqa is there in the present and Burqa will be there in future....But covering face is not acceptable..If girls want to cover their body from head to toe, better let them join other colleges where there is no restrictions...

    Face covered girls can be seen everywhere in colleges nowadays, Now it is a fashion too for some of them.. (I am not saying everyone...but some)..my objection is not against Burqa ,but against full covering in public places and institutions..Full covering is a security threat too..

    Note: I think Burqa is better than girls wearing tight jeans and showing their ku...de to all...

    Dear Jaimini, i agree with you for some extent on wearing burqa. However, i dont agree with you that female should not cover their face in public. What you will lose if someone covers their faces in public. No girl is covering her face in class room. This is just propoganda only. Sangh goondas are trying to create trouble even in educational instituions due to soft corner by police. What to wear and not to wear it is individual wish.

    maasha allah campus front handling this matter very well. Burka is a sign of cultured morally ideal society where as sanghi shawl is a sign of arrogance and ego in this particular case. So moral standards dress code must be protected by throwing out arrogance and goondaism from the campus. Never bow to any pressure tactics of sanghi elements. The minorities of shimoga now know how to answer the elements like the coastal region. The SP of shimoga is taking effective steps to keep society peaceful must be appreciated.

    Dear Students,

    Don't allow any religious practice into educational institutions.students need to get education in right time,once time gone away no one can recollect it.
    So students be cautious and study well in your educational time.
    Don't involve yourself in burqa or shawl,these items will not feed you in your future life if you have missed your education.

    Mr. Capital, even if uniform civil code comes in the burqa will remain. FYI and any andha bhakth's like you, uniform civil code is there for all criminal, civil, banking, insurance,torque that covers 95% of law of the land and only 5% remains with relates to customs like marriage and divorce like Hindu marriage act, muslim personal law, catholic marriage act/travancore Christian act , sikh marriage act, parsi marriage act and few special acts for tribal comes under these remaining 5% and again if somebody don't want to govern we have special marriage act anybody can go to court and marry or get divorce ( marrying may be easy with court but getting divorce is difficult and both husband and wife has to look for some keeps to satisfy themselves during this period). Hope you understood what is uniform civil code is all about.

    Let the student to wear shawl, for how long he may use as its not part of his culture or dress code so we muslim should not bother if our hindu brothers wear shawls, I know lot of Hindus who are practicing hindus and having good friendship with muslims and mean time these fanatics want us to fight whether its muslim or hindu fascist organisation , their main motto is do bring disharmony in the society so that they can flourish, the requirement of the hour is any committee working for the communal harmony shall intervene and shall not allow these fascist organisation to hijack this issue. I hope thses muslim students may weraing burka from last 15 years and their numbers may be lass than 5% of the total class strength. if our sikh brothers study in our schools will we ask for removal of turban, or any of our nun sisters comes with their dress will we ask them not to wear thier respectful dress. These Dal's have problem in my city when they attacked girls wearing the short dress or going pubs and same guys has problem when muslim were full covering dress..

    BJP supported groups wants to make disharmony in the state because they preparing for the next election so this type of situations are popping up. First anybody tell me that in collage any dress code is there? And uniforms are only for the school children’s then why unnecessary creating problems in the collage no one is questioning this only blaming others. Secondly this collage is government collage sate government should take strict action on all convicted students.

    Are they managing the College?

    Let the Management take action against any student who refuse to follow the Rules of the management.

    Such goondagiri students who assault other student to be removed from the college.

    Whoever it may be, rules should be same for all student .

    Dear Shirish, assulting of student and 2nd year BBM class student is false as it was well planned by sanghis. Sanghis want to create trouble in the campus on the behest of bjp. Trouble was started by these rowdees and they should be barred first. What the hell these goondas will lose if some one wears burqa. Every indian has the right to eat, drink, dress on his/her own will. As the college managemtn has no objection why these goondas are objecting.
