Madikeri, Feb 7: Ten tamed elephants from two elephant training camps in Kodagu were sent to Uttarakhand, on orders from chief conservator of forests here. The respective mahouts and workers escorted the elephants to Mathigodu elephant camp, and will return after training for mahouts there for six months.

There has been a huge demand for elephants from Kodagu as the animals have a good physique and are well-trained.

Kannandaranjan, Kushalnagar sub-zonal forest officer said that the best trained elephants in the camp have been sent to Uttarakhand as per orders from senior officers.

The elephants were given a bath by the mahouts at Dubare lake, fed a paddy, rice and corn breakfast and sent off to their new home in the morning. The ten elephants being relocated include Madakari (10 years), Gajaraja (10 years), Kenchagange (25 years), Kapila (32 years) and baby elephant Kapila (1.8 years), Thunga (15 years), a second baby elephant (1.8 years) and Bheeshma (9 years).

Four rogue elephants are being tamed at present, by keeping them in confinement. They will be admitted in Dubare camp after the training is completed.
