Bangalore, Feb 18: The city Manipal Health Systems and its flagship unit Manipal Hospital, Bangalore is in the news once again. This time around they have been recognized by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) for the quality of their full range of services spread across more than 50 specialties.
The NABH is part of the Quality Control of India (QCI) set up by the government of India as an autonomous body more than a decade ago. Just last week, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore was the top runner as the most patient-friendly hospital in the country. This conclusion was drawn from a consumer survey conducted by Voluntary Organization in the Interest of Consumer Education (VOICE) working in collaboration with the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), across all six metro cities and nine districts. The hospital also happened to be the only winner of the Golden Peacock Award amongst other hospitals in India and it was also the first super-specialty hospital in the country to be ISO certified for clinical, nursing, diagnostics and allied areas.
Ashwani Kumar, minister of state, ministry of commerce and industry, Govt of India, handed over the accreditation certificate instituted by Quality Council of India (QCI) to R Basil, MD and CEO of Manipal Health Systems and Dr Murali Srinivas, consultant neurology and advisor quality at the city Manipal Hospital in New Delhi on Sunday February 17.
It is indeed creditable that the hospital has managed to get the coveted NABH recognition in a single assessment, that too for over 50 specialties that the hospital offers. "To enable us go through the NABH assessment, we involved our entire hospital team who are well-versed in managing quality programmes on an ongoing basis. They studied the NABH requirements and made the necessary modifications in the processes where needed. No outside consultant or agency was hired for the assessment. It is an honour to receive the accreditation and the full credit goes to Team Manipal for this recognition." declared Basil.
The VOICE survey earlier had covered over 4000 consumers on areas ranging from cost of treatment to quality of care and service provided by the hospital. According to R Basil, being recognized as the most patient-friendly hospital is just a reflection of the work ethos at each and every Manipal Hospital. "We have been working tirelessly for over 5 years now to ensure that each and every patient who comes to us for treatment has a pleasant experience. Attention is being paid to the smallest of needs which a patient or his attendant may have. Anticipating their needs rather than reacting to them has been our approach through out."
Further he elaborated "Manipal Hospital started this journey by treating each patient as a "customer" which they very soon changed to treating them as "Guests". And now they have taken the relationship to the next level. The staff has been asked to treat each patient as if he was their own "Blood Relative". This has ensured that there is much more warmth and compassion in the hospital's interaction with their patients," Basil added.
President of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), Dr Ramdas Pai and the group CEO Dr Ranjan Pai have expressed their happiness on the hospital receiving the prestigious accreditation. The good news is that Delhites will soon have access to this personal touch in quality healthcare. Manipal Health Systems is all set to open their first hospital in Delhi towards the end of this year.
