Puttur, Apr 11: The increasing number of drugs abuse cases involving students in the town is strengthening the notion that the drugs mafia has been entrenched strongly in the town. As per an estimate, hundreds of students have fallen prey to this vice.

It may be recalled that a few days back, police personnel had taken into custody several students who were found to be behaving strangely at a birt day party after consuming ganja. In an incident last year, a person found to be selling ganja was nabbed by students and handed over to the police. There were over a dozen cases in which ganja traffickers were found to be active in the town and rural areas.

It appears that the accused are not too much bothered about problems created to them by law as they know that they can get bail easily. At the same time, the departments concerned including police and narcotics bureau have failed to find out the source of ganja supply and nail the criminals. As a result, intoxicants continue to be freely available and many teenagers including some who woud otherwise have a very bright future, go wayward instead of finding success in their lives. Even now the police department does not seem to have taken this menace with the seriousness it deserves, the people in general and many parents believe.

Some sources claim that dealing in drugs goes on near the main stand, and old school building at Nellikatte. It is said that drugs are sold at specified spots on particular days of the week at centres frequented by students like unauthoricsed paying guest accommodations, schools and college surroundings, etc. Cigarette butts and intoxicants were recently found inside the old school building at Nellikatte that is about to crash. As this building is deserted, it can be easily used by criminal elements at night, and the people had demanded for police patrolling around this building at night.
