Bengaluru: 'Janashri' Kannada news channel CEO arrested for extortion

Bengaluru, Apr 15 (IANS): The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kannada news channel 'Janashri' was arrested here on extortion charges, police said on Saturday.

"The television channel's CEO Lakshmiprasad Vajpai, 42, was arrested on Friday night after he was caught accepting the ransom money from a businessman whom he had blackmailed to expose him," Koramanagala Police Inspector R.M. Ajay told IANS here.

Police also arrested Mithun, an employee of the channel, along with Vajpai after raiding their office in the city's eastern suburb on a complaint from the businessman.

"Vajpai had allegedly threatened the businessman of telecasting a derogatory video footage on him and his company if he did not pay up Rs 10 crore," said Ajay.

The news channel had already telecast a part of the video to force the businessman to pay up the ransom.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on Saturday against the accused under sections 384 (extortion), 385 (putting a person in fear of injury) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on the victim's complaint.

Another case was registered against Vajpai and his associates at the Commercial Street Police Station under the same sections of the IPC for demanding Rs 10 crore and jewellery valued at Rs 30 lakh as extortion from another businessman.

Vajpai is alleged to have received Rs 10 crore through bank transactions in unspecified accounts out of the Rs 15-crore ransom he had sought from the second businessman.

The arrested persons were produced in a local court for judicial remand for further investigation.

This news channel has brought shame upon the journalist fraternity. The unthinkable has taken place.

Hope the authorities take stern measures against such yellow, treacherous, rotten, blackmailing journalists, so that, no other journalist/news channel personnel ever tries this type of misadventure.

The media association/s should also mark a very clear "Lakshman Rekha" and code of ethics, which have to be strictly followed by its members. Fake journalism can lead to unthinkable consequences.

India has worst journalism and human rights records after bjp came to power in 2014. One of the recent survey shows that India is just ahead of Syria in giving minorities their rights. That means we are far behind Pakistan ,Afghanistan etc..But our andh Bhakths are claiming that everything is fine here.

How come the otherwise seemingly hyper vigilant central IT/ED dept miss the scrutiny of this channel based in b'loge..., when lot of black money cases were unearthed by IT officials were b'lore centered. While i may be wrong, technically now IT & ED may send notice to the channel & take the case away from the state police investigation domain, ...... who knows later they may find reasons to believe & declare the channel & its CEO as clean .....????

Last week Mangalam channel CEO and some journalists arrested for creating fake news against a minister in Kerala. Kannada TV9 Journalists prosecuted for sting operation on Mr. D.K. Shiva Kumar in Karnakata. Now Janarshri CEO and Journalist arrested for extortion. What happening to the medias in India??? Now 24 Hours News channels in India wanted to telecast Breaking News every hour to increase their TRP and they are ready to go for any extent to create fake news. At the same way, action should be taken against the Time Now Channel Anchors for false allegation on Anti BJP parties and branding all Modi opponents as Anti nationals. This Modi bhakths should taught a lesson.
