Sonu Nigam goes on Twitter rant, terms Azaan 'forced religiousness'

Mumbai, Apr 17 (Agencies): Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam landed in trouble on Monday morning for his controversial tweets.

The singer took to Twitter early in the morning when he found himself woken up by the morning Azaan from a mosque presumably near his house.

In a series of tweets, he described as hooliganism or 'gundagardi' the use of loudspeakers to broadcast sermons and calls to prayers by mosques, temples and gurudwaras.

The singer was apparently so displeased by the sound of Azaan that he termed it as "forced religiousness".

Sonu then went on a Twitter rant as he put out a series of tweets on the subject and even questioned, "Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?"

In no time, the singer started facing severe backlash on Twitter for his comments. Many users criticised him for raking up a religious issue.

From the temple bell in the street in Rameshwaram to which he woke up, to the diverse spectrum of cultures Late President Abdul Kalam never complained of forced religiousness but he found devotion in it.

Mr.Sonu Nigam Raja Harishchandra is a 1913 Indian realistic "silent film", directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, and is the first full-length Indian feature film.

Will Bollywood stop using the new technology and revert back to silent movies? Let's Bollywood stop producing the modern movie which contain sex, violence, noise pollution and force the 'viewers' of silent movies. Let's see how the singers will survive?

I have 'birds chirping' everyday morning in my window which wakes me up too, can I shoot them all because it disturb my sleep and complained to God for forcing on us?

Mr.Sonu Nigam don't mix too much water in your late night party shots. Otherwise you will suffer 'insomnia'.

"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise".

Is Sonu Nigam will set 'Raja Harishchandra' ring tone in his smart phone?

Quite frankly ALL religions should be barred for using loud speaks for their religious festivals. Whether it is a Church, Temple or Mosque that disturb the peace to broadcast their religious practises and disturb the peace of the neighbourhood should be banned.

Playing loud music for weddings, religious functions should be severely restricted with the minimum decibels. All open air speeches and vehicles that broadcast advertising and music should also be banned.

The next target should be all vehicles on the roads that honk for nothing. Honking should restricted only when necessary.

PIL needs to be filed in Supreme Court against this practise. Especially in Udupi this problem has become unbearable.. So many people are working in night shift and sleep at 4:30 am to be woken up by this loud speaker. People cannot even enjoy a holiday peacefully. But no one is ready to touch this subject for vote bank.

If you condemn wastage of milk, you should talk against noise pollution too.

Moreover, now that everyone uses smart phones, why not muslims of one locality form a whats app group and invite them to the mosque with a group message? why the noisy tradition?

You have risen to today's fame and glory by start singing songs of legend Mohammmed Rafi, who was a born Muslim. Now your sleep is interrupted just because two minute Adaan, call for prayer. Where were you last 47 years, sine you were born, in a thick forest with animals?

Now you don't care about anybody because you made wealth, good for several generations to come. Displeasing Indians around the world, particularly Muslims is not going to affect you. But, remember one should never forget his past.

I think it is very much appropriate to revisit on use of loud speakers whether by any religious institution or any organisation near residential houses, hospitals, schools etc.

Technology has advanced so much and we can serve the purpose with better innovative ways. It is better we use them within limit and not to disturb the whole area. I am sure all people with good understanding will agree and look for an alternative way out.

may be sonu faced problem while he was sleeping at morning time, but because of 1 person, blaming whole religious act is not right,

Freedom of speech is misusing in India since some started slogan against motherland. Today many are confused to support freedom of speech as they did when some shouted slogan against Motherland or oppose.

Lesser the followers, louder the loud speaker.

Finally, someone dared to raise a issue in public which everyone else is afraid to raise. Yes, people are afraid to complain that they are disturbed by loudspeakers from religious places because they are afraid of the backlash or violence.

Only people living near religious places will understand what Sonu Nigam is trying to say. Loud speakers in religious places is a huge problem. They dont care what time of the night they start ranting and how loud. They dont care about infants, dont care about students studying, dont care about elderly people, dont care about people taking the precious night's rest. They just want to enforce their prayer on loud speakers because their followers are not interested in coming to the temple/mosque. And this is one issue the 2 major religions of India will keep quiet because both are guilty of it.

Where was he sleeping till today at this age?? Was he sleeping so far in any forest to complain now? I believe he was not sleeping on foothpath to say the voice disturbs his sleep now... If u have locked the doors and windows and turn on fan and fall asleep at early morning which is a deep sleep time where a human being will be in such an unconscious state that he wont be even knowing if an earth quake happens, and this fellow must be drunk by late night function and complaining his problem.

By the way, God has made night to sleep and take rest and made day to work. So if one misuse such environment then its an ultimate loss to human health.
Why would doctor recommend to sleep early and wake up early and offer prayer and then do exercise?

I have witnessed many Non-Muslim brothers & Sisters in villages, who used to wake up early after hearing azan and start doing their day to day work. It was such a pleasant environment to witness women's waking up early and brooming their aangan (varanda), elderly giving water to plants and trees etc.

When one wake up early, they can feel the freshness in body and life and could hear the melodious tunes of birds, pleasant weather etc. There are so many good things and yet people complain of Azan.

He is worried because he has to wake up by the Azaan in the morning.

Actually, there are lot of benefits by waking up in this particular time. This time is, what is called in Ayurveda as "Brahma-Muhurata".

According to "The Art of Living":

Brahma-Muhurata means ‘the time of Brahma…the pure consciousness - for rising up in morning.

About an hour and a half before the sunrise, a great shift in energy fills space. Then, about half an hour before sunrise, a second boom of energy dawns in the atmosphere. Hope, inspiration and peace manifest at this time. This time is considered best for attaining bhram gyan (meditation and self analysis), supreme knowledge and eternal happiness. At this time, the environment is pure and calm and soothing and the mind is fresh after sleep.

Meditation at this time improves mental performance thus helps in increasing satva guna therefore subduing mental irritation or hyperactivity and lethargy which is contributed by rajas and tamas guna.

..wow..let us see how many will oppose his freedom of expression in the pretext of religious feeling..waiting for statements of liberals who cry on freedom of expression..by the way, i am born & brought up in muslim area, Azaan is like Alarm for our studies to play time..never felt it as nuisance..but time is changing, when unnecessary controversies created on Vandematartam, Janagana mana, saraswati vandana saying its hurts religious sentiments, people tend to rant like above also..hope commonsense prevail, spirit of multiculturalism and real secularism triumph..

    Dear Sonu,
I was your big fan but today onwards NO.
Now I understood the reason behind your downfall, your own cheap and retarded mentality, you should also know that you are a public figure and celebrity. U should be well known that you can't hurt sentiments like this. Look at Arijit Singh how a down to earth and kind person he is.

Not a surprise . Hatred towards islam nowadays especially in the matters like music triple talaq ect guarrentees some authoritarian benifit under the present regime. Not only sonu nigam the namesake muslims like muqtar abbas naqvi or shazia ilmi ect doing it another way. But we as practicing muslims will always stand by what our almighty said through our prophet. Sonu nigams or mahammad rafis bread earned source music actually prohibited in islam . Aazaan will be so sweet for the believers but for saitanic heart its a pinching tone.
