Azaan controversy: Sonu Nigam shaves head after cleric offers Rs 10 lakh reward

Mumbai, April 19 (IANS): Renowned singer Sonu Nigam on Wednesday shaved off his head, hours after offering to apologize if his tweets on azaan blared from loudspeakers were seen to be anti-Muslim.

After the tweets sparked a row, a cleric in West Bengal, Syed Shah Atif Ali Al-Qaderi, announced he would give Rs 10 lakh to anyone who shaves off Sonu Nigam's head and garlands with footwear.

Sonu Nigam took up the challenge, calling a Muslim barber to do the job.

"I have requested Aalim (Hakim) to come. He will shave my head, but it isn't any agitation or challenge. The one who is cutting hair is a Muslim and I am a Hindu. There is no animosity," Nigam said here.

"The same language of fatwa can be communicated through a language of love," he added.

Nigam underlined that he never meant any offence.

"Being secular means understanding each other's problems and not saying 'I am only right'. 'Aazan zaruri hai, loudspeaker nahi' (Aazan is necessary, not the loudspeakers).

"That's my only point. It is about the timing. Loudspeaker shouldn't be used at a wrong time. Even when we perform, there is a proper time," added the singer.

Nigam invited the media, saying he will go bald at 2 p.m. "Keep your Rs 10 lakh ready Moulvi," he tweeted.

Nigam kept his word and then addressed a media conference at his residence as police beefed up security for him.

The cleric, however, refused to pay up, saying only one part of his challenge had been taken up.

The singer appeared before journalists with a clean-shaven pate, wearing spectacles and smiling away even as Muslim groups protested and threatened to move the court against him.

"All I wanted was consideration for one another... Everyone has the right to have an opinion. My opinion is in temple, masjid and gurudwara, loudspeakers are not religious necessities. It is not part of a religion.

"When loudspeakers are installed in religious places, it is sort of a declaration that 'this is my religion'. The same goes for people dancing on roads drunk during religious processions. I am against that.

"I am very secular. I am not right or left wing. I stand in between. I've never had to make a speech like this. I just raised a social topic, not a religious topic," Nigam added.

It all started on Monday when Nigam lashed out at "forced religiousness" in India after being woken up by azaan from a mosque near his home. He later clarified that he was not against any one religion.

No comments for this kind of issue would be the best comment I believe.... Because if we say something people will call us promoter of "intolerance" and if we don’t say anything means we are cheating ourselves!!! Yes, problem is there but…. live with that because it’s perfect time to get up in the morning especially those who are working in Gulf countries since our duty starts at 08.00 a.m. or 06.00 or 07.00 a.m. sometimes. And this sound is only for few minutes so it’s not a big deal…

    Shettre,
What can happen when a drop of water falls from a height of 2 meters on your head? nothing.
But, imagine, you are tied to a chair, head shaved and a pot filled with water is tied hanging 2 meters above your head with a tiny hole. There is a drop falling on your head on every minute.
after an hour, you will feel it is not a drop of water, it is a stone. By the after five to six hours, you will feel someone is shooting a bullet through your head, and actually you will go mad!

This is a military torture technique.

I think the government should clearly make it a ban from 10pm to 6 am. Presently the government puts a ban on music and any sort of noise or after 10 pm that ban should be extended and allow people to rest. Why do you have broadcast and wake up 90% of non Muslims, and you'll are 10% of the population. This is India not Pakistan, I really don't know what will happen when you'll become 90% of the population?

Sonu Nigam has no objections for Azan, he objects the use of loud speakers and he is right. At a time when people are tired, sick and deep asleep why should their sweet dreams get disturbed at this unearthly hour ? Why don't you'll purchase Alarm clocks to wake you up. Or employ some who will phone or SMS you'll all home phones or cell phones.

The loud speaker was only invented in 1925.

The two inventors may not have had the slightest imagination as to the noise pollution the instrument would cause to the world.

Many people suffer silently from the loud noise caused by the loud speakers.

Surely all prayer calls before 1930 were done through personal vocal chords, and not through loud speakers.

So, there is no harm in going back to the tradition that existed before 1930.

    SOME BENIFITS WAKING UP EARLY....
1.If you’re studyingl, you should know that research conducted by Texas University found that students who consistently woke up early each day actually scored better test scores and overall grade points, in comparison to those who slept in all the time.

    2. WAKING UP EARLY HELPS TO SUSTAIN HELTHIER DIET
This brings me to the next benefit. Often late snoozers tend to skip breakfast because they try to get in every last wink of sleep and skip breakfast. Skipping breakfast is a bad idea because your body needs those nutrients in the morning for energy and focus.

Your body has been on a “fast” all night (6 to 8 hours) and you need to “break the fast” with some healthy food. When you decide to skip your A.M. meal, your body goes into starvation mode so the next time you actually eat something, you are more likely to overeat and crave unhealthy foods.

Eating breakfast is also a foundation for building healthy eating habits and makes you less likely to eat junk the rest of the day.

    3. Waking Up Early Enhances Your Productivity.
There are less distractions in the early hours of the day so you can achieve more with minimal interruptions.
After a good night’s sleep, your brain is charged and ready to work hard. You are at your efficient best and will get things done quicker and better.
Early risers are also better at making decisions, planning and setting goals.
Waking up early may find you grumpy in the beginning but once you get used to it, you will have more energy to take on the day.

4.WAKING UP EARLY GIVES U BETTER MENTAL HEALTH
Studies have shown “morning people” are often more positive, more optimistic and more likely to experience satisfaction in their lives. While several night owls are known for their creativity, they can also pay the price by becoming more likely to succumb to depression and other psychological problems

    5. WAKING UP EARLY GIVES U BETTER QUALITY SLEEP.

    6. PEOPLE LIVE LONGER. LESS CHANCES OF GETTING CANCER.

    Mr.C.T. Thomas, Nadalike
Sir, Go back to yesterday's Tweet. Read that repeatedly till you understand the hypocrisy and way of expressing it. If he is not enraged the feeling of Muslims he wouldn't have apologised for it.
We all have stop clock in our smart phones. Please use it to calculate yourself how long this call last in the morning hours. I will also request you to note the nearby temple ,Church, Gurudwara, Yakshagana mela, vacuum horn from national highways as well which has equal decibel.
Deepavali for 3 days, Dussehra for 8 days.......? are you justifying 'noise pollution' and selective in criticism?
Gentleman, Deepavali is the 'festival of light'. But we Indian's are uniquely celebrating it as 'festival of sounds'. We all have objection for odd even system of AAP when our citizens can't even breath , but silently contribute to environmental degradation in the name of festivities. Does it have any religious significance? Most of the religious practice in India has no religious backing rather it celebrated as culture associated with tradition. From centuries it is celebrated no one interfered.
We all read in our schools that our ancestor who look likes Ape walked nude. If we believed in Darwin theory human evolution should have not stopped from advancing into most modern humans. Yes! There are no electricity in those time. If go by the analogy of singer then we will need to stick to the early days of science.
Sonu Nigam would have been never been heard, if Bollywood still producing 'silent movies'. Does it mean than silver screen stop adapting to modern technology?
It is not about the religion. It is how tolerant and respect to each other. Loudspeaker is the modern adaptation of technology when people of one religion is scattered and there is few concentration of worship house.
Science has so advanced that he can make his home full sound proof and have home theatre without Tweeting and having 'Kumbhakarna' sleep in his own privacy.

They had their media standing outside Sonu Nigam house and no adhaan was heard during Fajr. They later interviewed Lata Sachdev, a local resident who mentioned that she hasnt heard the adhaan in their locality as the nearest masjid is 600 metres away.
Its getting clearer with every passing day, how this guy has shamelessly used a Muslim call to prayer for his own publicity.

Comparing to yesterday's Tweet of Sonu Nigam in today's statement he his contradicting himself.
    Yesterday;
God bless everyone. I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India
    — Sonu Nigam (@sonunigam) April 16, 2017
    Today;
"I have requested Aalim (Hakim) to come. He will shave my head, but it isn't any agitation or challenge. The one who is cutting hair is a Muslim and I am a Hindu. There is no animosity," Nigam

If we go by the same analogy then I guess crackers weren’t invented at the time of Ramayan then why are we using crackers during Diwali and causing more noise pollution?
And pleeez, don’t think I’m calling you a hypocrite. You’re not. Well, at least your tweet is very secular in nature.
And Sonu, didn’t you accompany your father during jagaratas and sing the night away? Do you think it might have disturbed someone else’s sleep?
Anyhoo, keeping your strong moral urge to end this gundagardi in mind, we do hope to see you tweet more often during Ganesh Chathurti, big fat Indian weddings, jagaratas, durga pujo and so on...
Sonu you don't need to be Hindu or Muslim to be tolerant. You need to be Human first.
Azzan is a prayer call for Muslims. Hindus it is Arati.Christians, Sikh, Buddhist do have some significance as well.
By heeding to the Moulvi call you made yourself fool. Tomorrow he will say shave your eyebrows will you do it and post a picture?

Deepavali for 3 days, Dasheera for 8 days. Christmas crackers and tolls of bells1 day, But not 365 days, and this is what Sonu is saying. at that time he was earning huge amount, didn't he realise people around such concert are also getting disturbed.
if he has right to express his opinion, why does SANGHIS against Kanhaiya Kumar when he was expressing his thoughts??
as I said, slowly he is loosing mental balance, we have seen him in INDIAN IDOL reality show.
in Bollywood industry there is too much demand for foreign artist, who can sing better than SONU NIGAM, To get some sympathy from Public he started this Tactics, so that he will be in news for many days and get some job in JAGRATAS

I do not understand why MOST of the Muslims in India and across the world are so intolerant. Why don't you understand that you have to respect other's freedom of speech?
Mr. Nigam had problem with the loud sound of the Azaan. He expressed his displeasure. I do not think the sound of Azaan will go well with patients admitted in a hospital and elderly non-muslims.

I have grown up in a place where we had a mosque very near to my house. I have grown up waking up to the sound of Azaan, but never felt it disturbing. I do not have problems.
But when I am sick and get asleep late, the azaan is really disturbing, same with the case of devotional songs from temples. That is my view, and i am entitled to express it in this country.

    @Shankar, Mangalore
According to You, MOST of the Muslims in India and across the world are so intolerant. Then please give your opinion on the following:

Both Muslims and Non Muslims are protesting democratically when a famous singer compared Azan (runs for almost 2 minutes) in loudspeaker in the early morning to “Religious Goondaism”. The objection to his statement is because he stays 3 km away from nearest Masjid and he lives in an Air conditioned apartment which is completely sealed from oustside disturbances. Also he never objected on any occasions in his entire life until now for many other festivals that are celebrated with loudspeakers and even span for almost more than a week altogether. This clearly reveals his communal mindset. If he was innocent then he could have told that he is against the use of loudspeakers (or atleast in favour of low decibels output from loudspeakers) in any religious places to keep his dignity intact- BUT ONLY MUSLIMS ARE INTOLERANT ACCORDING TO YOU

There is NO PROBLEM when BJP minister is Sadhvi Nirajnai Jyoti claimed that “Muslim or Christians all are sons of Ram and those who no more stand with this ideology are not citizens of this nation. She did not even stop there and continued saying that those who support this ideology are RAMZADE and others are “HARAMZADE”- BUT ONLY MUSLIMS ARE INTOLERANT ACCORDING TO YOU
There is NO PROBLEM when BJP union minister Giriraj Singh during 16th Lok Sabha elections called Modi's critics Pakistanis, "those who oppose prime minister candiate Narendra Modi should leave India as their place will be in Pakistan- BUT ONLY MUSLIMS ARE INTOLERANT ACCORDING TO YOU

There is NO PROBLEM when an old age Muslim farmer is attacked and MURDERED in Rajasthan while transporting cattle with valid license; And our beloved PM has nothing to comment on this terrorist activity in his own country while he has lots of time even to tweet and congratulate his party men for their victory just in local elections al

Try playing a devotional song of any religion in Saudi Arabia in a loud speaker at 5:00 AM in the morning and lets see what peaceful people will do there to the person who played it irrespective of his religion???

Its like keeping a reminder in your phone to do things, if you are so attached to something then I don't think you require a reminder..

If his real concern was about loudspeaker, he could have file the PIL in Bombay High Court to stop or reduce the volume of loudspeaker during the night in temples, mosques and churches. But he clearly mentioned about AZAN in his tweet and used the word like 'gunda gardi'. By his one tweet he lost his muslim fans across the world especially from UAE. Anyhow since he given some clarifications, no need to drag this and make it an big issue. Cooooool..................

The mullahs and others who want the loudspeakers to wake people up should be reminded that there were no loudspeakers in the 7th century. Also there were no alarm clocks or cell phones which can be used to wake people or issue calls to families or individuals. It is time people woke up and realized that we are in the 21st century.
