Mangaluru: Residents of Padavu Alake oppose bar near govt school

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jun 4: Residents of Padavu Alake, Samrudhinaragar, Kulshekar (just about a km from Bikarnakatte) have submitted a petition to the deputy commissioner of excise, Mangaluru, with a copy to excise commissioner, Bengaluru, opposing the proposed bar in the residential area. The proposed bar is coming up in the area which has a government school, Anganawadi centre, a temple and the wireless office of the government of India, apart from scores of residents in the vicinity.

The complaint signed by about 300 residents of the area has pointed out that that the proposed bar has violated all building bylaws and has also diverted the building plan. The complaint also says that no proper mahajar of the area was done by the concerned authorities before giving permission to the proposed bar.

The petition submitted to the commissioner of excise has been acknowledged by the said office.

The residents in the said complaint have highlighted the Bombay high court's landmark judgment of 2012, which had remarked that "the residents have the right to oppose a bar coming up in the residential area as it violates the fundamental right of the residents to have a decent life and ensure safety and security of women".

It may be recalled that after the Supreme Court ban on liquor vends within 500 meters of national highways; many bars are relocating to residential areas amidst stiff opposition from residents. With only 27 days left for shifting these wine shops and bars as per the orders the residents are worried that authorities concerned may overlook their complaint and allow the bar to come up in the residential area.
