Mangalore, Apr 9: A major fire broke out at a house belonging to Ganesh Nayak, owner of Canara Coir, at Dongerkery near Kodialbail here on Wednesday April 9.

Though initial reports stated that the fire was caused after a gas cylinder exploded, sources have now confirmed that the fire was caused by a stray spark that set coir sheets in the upper part of the house in flames. Within no time the fire spread and huge rings of thick smoke filled the sky for nearly an hour.

'We could hear cracking sounds for several minutes, and at first we thought it was someone bursting firecrackers. But when we came out of our houses we saw this huge fire engulfing the house,' an eyewitness said.

The neighbours called in the fire engine which rushed to the spot. The fire fighters soon had the fire under control.

Though human lives were spared, two dogs reportedly died in the incident.
