Plans afoot to set up additional airport between Udupi and Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Jun 10: Survey is being conducted to decide the possibility of opening an additional airport between Udupi and Mangaluru, said R V Deshpande the minister for large & medium industries and infrastructure development.

He was answering to a question raised by Captain Ganesh Karnik in Legislative Council, on Friday June 9.

“In a meeting held between chief secretary from the state government and chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI) on June 1, it was decided that a survey will be conducted first on the possibility of runway extension on an area of 33 kilometres at the existing Mangaluru International Airport. Then a survey will be conducted on the possibility of having an additional airport in between Udupi and Mangaluru,” Deshpande said.

“A proposal of restructuring of Mangaluru International Airport on an additional area of 286 acres has been submitted to AAI. As the airport comes under, AAI, it has to take a final call on this matter. AAI has opined that it is difficult to acquire 286 acres of land. AAI also proposed four alternative plans. When the state government studied these four proposals, all looked impractical. Ultimately it was decided to carry out survey on the possibility of runway extension on 33 acres land and opening of additional airport between two coastal cities.” Deshpande added.

“Restructuring and extension of runway at Mangaluru airport has been abandoned. Meanwhile an international airport will come up in Kannur in Kerala. This will have adverse effect on the number of passengers using Mangaluru airport.” said Captain Karnik during the discussion.

“There are only flights to Gulf countries from Mangaluru. If Kannur airport becomes operational, then Mangaluru airport may service only the passengers flying to Bengaluru as it will have tough competition from Kannur airport. Hence Mangaluru airport should be properly developed fully and runway extension should be implemented at the earliest,” said MLC Ivan D’Souza.

In future there will be more & more budget airlines. Earlier it used to be within a continent and now they're being flown between America & Europe. In future there might be budget airlines even between America & Asia or a flight connecting Toronto - New York - Mangalore (in case it has a bigger runway)since the newest aircraft's like 787 are making it possible.

Airport, Bullet Train, 100 feet road, Konadha Hole, Yenchinala aapundu yenklena share kudsadh malpule. Do we need two airports for small town like Mangalore ? Metro Citu like Mumai, Kolkotta, Hydrabad have one Airport. This is really crazy, like Kerala which has 3 Airports for a small state.

Unfortunately Kannur, which is a smaller city than Mangalore has a twice as large metropolitan area than Mangalore. Also it's location in Kerala would bring in many more vacationers and international travelers than the Mangalore area as Kerala is an internationally known vacation destination. The Kerala state government is no doubt aware of this and will go forward with their plans. It would seem that it would be necessary for the Karnataka government to assist in updating and expanding the Mangalore airport if they want to compete with the Kerala government. International airports bring more jobs and industries. Cities that fail to compete for this traffic will be left behind in the economic competition.

    @ Bhaskar,

Although am not an expert, I commented in DW long back, about the consequences the ill prepared ML airport about the advent of Kannur airport, which is become a reality soon.

ML airport was turned into an international airport due to the strong ML lobboy, and due to lack of same in Udupi dist. earlier.

Now that Udupi has a minister represented in the assembly, still nothing has been done in this direction.

Earlier, Udupi district had sufficient land for a truly international airport in addition to the advantage of Central location for both Udupi, Karkala, ML as well as Karwar, Hubli etc.

Our leaders will only shed crocodile tears, when things go out of control!!

Good job ......Plans afoot to set up additional airport between Udupi and Mangaluru. Recently I saw a traffic problem on Kemmannu Road, Santhekatte...... We can't broader roads. Make one Airport in Kemmannu to Udupi. In foreign countries they make good transport system to connect airports... Mono rail, metro etc...... India is taking advanced system ..... i.e. connecting additional airport between Udupi and Mangalore????.

Utter foolishness by the proposed personnel to have adjacent Airport to Mangalore, where as the distance between these coastal cities is hardly 50 KM.I must say by my experience Mangalore Airport is not fully developed upto the mark to be called as International Airport unless it is fully complied.Just accepting Air Traffic from Gulf region does not make it International.Comply fully to international norms then think about having one more Airport at the backyard.

Some politician trying to increase the value of his land. This is real estate mafia at work colluded with politicians. They know as soon as they fly these roumous of airport the real estate around the area will take off. Airport remains a distant dream. Some have already taken printout of dk and udupi district maps and using compass box to get the exact in-between area!! Expect real estate rates to sky rocket whether or not airport becomes a reality or not.

I agree with many of the comments made..indicating this is a Drama and no real follow up.We have been following up on a direct flight effort from Riyadh to Mangalore for long time. There is no real political will to do that...in addition Airlines also not pushing for the runway extension project. Chaltha hai..chalne do approach.

Initial plans to set up airport near Padubidri in 1950's was abandoned due to objection of land mafia (zamindars) and not due to Mangalore lobby. Just don't fly from Mangalore airport for whom it is dangerous. Additional airport between Udupi and Mangalore is a distant dream. The effect of new Kannur airport will be severe to Kozhikode airport than Mangalore airport.

The present Airport is the first to operation in Karnataka 1950. Thanks to legendary and visionary leaders like Dr Pai, Sri Srinivas Mallya . All our new gen leaders contribution is nill..did anybody after 1980 any major impactable institutions are set up in Mangalore?? answer is No....Mr Moily Mr Poojary or Mr Oscar Fernandes to introspect . Now a best Airport is an Need of the hours or else Kerala will drive away the opportunity they may come up with another Airport might be in Kasaragod also.
