Udupi, Jul 6: Vishwa Bunts Nadavara Janajagrathi Balaga on Thursday July 6, condemned the stay order issued on the renaming of St Aloysius College Road as Mulky Sundararama Shetty Road and alleged that Congress legislators MLC Ivan D'Souza and MLA J R Lobo had a role to play in the controversy.

Addressing media persons at Udupi press club in Brahmagiri, Belve Vasanth Kumar Shetty said, "There are 110 Bunts' associations. The name of Mulky Sundararama Shetty was selected unanimously by Mangaluru City Corporation and the state government. No one had recommended renaming the existing road. Moreover, the date was fixed and the official programme invitation was printed. The programme was canceled at the last minute. This has hurt many people including members of the Bunts community. This will also harm the communal harmony between the two minority groups. Definitely, there is a political conspiracy behind it."

"It is a fact that the name of the road was Light House Hill Road and is mentioned in the St Aloysius College website. The news about the unveiling of the renamed board was published in media. Late Sundararama Shetty was a student of St Aloysius College. All procedures were followed as per the law, before releasing the government’s official circular. It is also said that there is no written document available for naming the road as St Aloysius College Road," he added.

"It is an insult to a great personality like late Sundararama Shetty and the Bunts community. Vishwa Bunts Nadavara Janajagrathi Balaga had planned to hold a protest on July 8, but the members came to know that, there is a meeting organized with district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai and the deputy commissioner regarding the same issue. If the outcome of the meeting is negative, the members of Vishwa Bunts Nadavara Janajagrathi Balaga will hold a massive protest after the meeting," he informed.

Aroor Thimmappa Shetty said, "The stay order on renaming of the road, has hurt the feelings of the fans of late Sundaram Shetty and the members of the Bunt community. However, we urge the concerned authority to take a dignified decision on the issue."

President of Senior Citizen’s Forum Bhaskar Rai, convener M Chandrashekar Hegde and legal advisor Krishna Raja Shetty Choradi were present in the press meet.

Sad for those fight for no reasons. Politics and Power hungry idiots fight communal ways. Only st.aloysius can pray for them. Just a road name through the college and so much hangama. Got best education from this college but in return fight and negative deeds.

Why you did not select any roads in and and the Bunder Area ?

Why you are behind only the St. Aloysius road is the MAIN QUESTION ?.

into controversy. While he was living, he was gentle and non-controversial person.

The Fight should have been on the following( Not limited )
Quality of the road
Width of the road
are there pavements and foot paths ?
Sign boards ...
are there zebra crossings for pedestrians at identified areas.
is it adequately lit at night?
Does the road have rain water drains...etc

India stands at No 61 in road quality (Year 2015) .It is below srilanka in quality ratings ..I think the discussions in this forum and the news items itself is a pointer to our priorities ...Maybe we should set right our priorities

No individual is greater than an institution. With due respect to this great soul who in all his humility must have worked real hard to establish the bank .The members who have held a press conference would have done a yeoman service if they contributed in his memory and started a trust in his name in the College to help financially all who belong to their community .It is better we don't create unnecessary controversy as There are better things to work for.

There is no political conspiracy here. Name-changing seems to have been done sort of clandestinely by interest groups. Perhaps even changing LHH Road to St. Aloysius College Road was done the same way. I was never aware of that change. Was it done openly, legitimately? If so, then there is a solid case. If not, the law must take its course. St. Aloysius College Road only refers to the institution at the end of that road. The College is not enhanced by the name of the road, it only indicates where the College is located. The whole stretch from the bottom of the hill need not be called SAC Road, only that stretch where the road from Balmatta intersects LHH Road should legitimately be called SAC Road. If not, the name would automatically include the Hill itself - perhaps SAC Road proponents would like to call it SAC Hill Road! I would be interested to know how this controversy is resolved. .

You are absolutely right! Tomorrow St Aloysius College "Institute" might say that we are there since 125 years, let us change the name of Bavuta gudde as "St Aloysius College Gudde".

Somewhere we need to draw a line to restrict the groups, institutes, Balagas keeping any name legitimately.

That is the reason I have mentioned earlier here

First : Originally It was Light house/ Bavuta Gudde Road, then why change it to Mulky Sundararama Shetty Road or St Aloysius College Road. Then there wont be any argument.

Second: St Aloysius College itself is a land mark, however if the institute wants to name the road as "St Aloysius College Road" then only the road which deviates left from the light house road (cross road) and reaches the college can be a St Aloysius College Road. Because principally that road leads to college.

Verdict should be: Light house/ Bavuta Gudde Road cannot be renamed for lifetime will remain as Light house/ Bavuta Gudde Road. Both Institute and Balagas should keep quite and no protest.

Who are the members of this Vishwa Bunts Balaga? Do they represent all Bunts? The Bunt and the Brahmin community is so grateful to St. Aloysius for educating thousands of them, How could anyone speak against their Alma Mater? It is a matter of respect to Mulky Sundaram Shetty that the road is named as St. Aloysius. I am sure he is still grateful to his Alma Mater for making him what he became. It is no right to be communal on the issue for St. Aloysius has always been looked at as an institution of broad vision and inclusive of all humans. May I on behalf of all people of goodwill request the Viswa Bunts Balaga not to proceed anymore with the issue. Instead promote the name of St. Aloysius College Road to make Mulky Sundaram Shetty happy in the place where he is, in eternity. He will surely feel proud of his Alam Mater even from there where we cannot see him

The original name of Bavutagudda road should be restored, since it is related to the hoisting of national flag during Independence by freedom fighters on the hill, the sub road connecting Aloysius college should be named as St Aloysius College road, end this controversy

Instead of changing exiting 250 years old road?
You just initiate it there are thousands of well wishers to contribute,
There are so many villages they do not have bridges to cross rivers and small river-lets school children and age old people suffering and even loosing their lives because of the small man made wooden bridges, why can't a start new initiative which will be benefited by mass.

St Aloysius College situated in that road, so "St Aloysius College Road" it shows some sense.
St Aloysius College is prod Mangalore, Late Sundararama Shetty was a student of St Aloysius College his popularity gain some credit also gone to St Aloysius College.

My strong suggestion do not not hurt anything of any matter, very simple suggest one particular road rename that to "Late Sundararama Shetty Road" but definitely not St Aloysius College Road.

Why you guys are not getting any road in Udupi and Mulky?? Why go to the base of 137 year old stalwart institution and cry foul? MSRS is a student of this institution......you want to place student above institution? Many are insulting themselves....due to vested interests!
Why not forget bitter issues and go on with life? No one will get political mileage by raking up this issue over and over again! For getting votes do some non corrupt praiseworthy job. Construct some beautiful ring roads or bridges with contribution and name it the way you wish!

I belong to India first then to my community . Who are these bunch of people and who gave them authority to speak on behalf of the Bunt community.

St. Aloysisus College has never ever made any distinction based on caste or creed while educating students and created global citizens out of Mangalore.

Govt. of the day has made a right decision by stopping the renaming of the road , it is justice to institute and all its students who have brought laurels to Mangalore.

as per earlier all news items it was initiative of vijaya bank workers organisation to change existing st. aloysuis college road to sunderam shetty road.it was not either initiated by bunts association or their 110 bunt association. Now this issue off road changing taken new turn giving little community and political colour . With due respect to late sunderram shetty and his contribution to built vijaya bank and giving opportunity of employment for the people of S K and udipi district the authority very well keep his name to new road instead of exaggerating this small issue.

With due respect for the late Sundararama Shetty for his immense contribution to the undivided Dakshina Kannada District , renaming an already popular name of the road may be Light House Hill Road or St. Aloysius College Road is just a matter of confusion and controversy. OMG!!Now another group comes up with hurt feelings...earlier Aloysiuns and now Bunts. Guys, please keep your feelings for yourself because administration should be run on rules and laws and not feelings. Moreover, Aloysiuns have never objected to naming a road after this great personality, Their objection is about the road leading to their institution which is in existence even before this personality was born, be kept out of this controversy....Please try to find another road and we will all come and actively take part in the process of dedicating it to late Sundararama Shetty.

Don't mislead anyone here. No one is touching that small SA Road which connects LHH road to SAC.

What is the point in renaming that stretch which has nothing to do with Vijaya bank !. Only some goodangadi and juice amgadi in that road. You guys keep it for yourself . But whata the problem in renaming LHH road ? That too following all legal procedures !! Why u guys did Ungli here and stayed t using your MLA !. Unnesssary ly created a communal situation .
