Bengaluru: I-T raids D K Shivakumar's houses, resort in multiple locations; seizes Rs 10 crore

Updated

Bengaluru/New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS): Income Tax Department officials on Wednesday raided Karnataka Power Minister D.K. Shivakumar's residences and a private resort outside Bengaluru where 44 Gujarat Congress legislators are housed and said Rs 10 crore in cash have been seized.

The taxmen's searches stoked a major political row as the development echoed in Parliament and triggered cries of foul play by the Congress.

"Our state Investigative Wing is conducting searches at the residence of a Karnataka Minister (Shivakumar) and the room he is staying at a resort (Eagleton) near Bengaluru where some MLAs from another state (Gujarat) are put up," Income Tax Joint Commissioner S. Ramesh said in a statement in Bengaluru.

The searches were conducted under Section 132 of the Income Tax Act as an evidence-gathering exercise in compliance with statutory requirements, he said.

The searches were believed to have been conducted at Shivakumar's houses in Bengaluru and Delhi. Officials said Shivakumar's aide and his driver have been detained for questioning.

"The Income Tax officials seized over Rs 10 crore during the raids at over 39 places in Delhi and Bengaluru," an I-T official told IANS.

"About Rs 7.5 crore was seized in Delhi and Rs 2.5 crore in Bengaluru," the official said.

The early morning exercise sparked an uproar in both the houses of Parliament where the Congress claimed that it was an attempt to terrorise the Gujarat MLAs ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha elections, in which senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel is fighting a close battle to retain his seat. Already six Congress lawmakers have resigned from the Congress.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley rejected charges of political motives behind the searches and said these had nothing to do with the Congress legislators' stay at the Bengaluru resort and developments in Gujarat.

He said the searches related to "an individual", an apparent reference to Shivakumar, and said the tax officials visited the resort because he was staying there.

They (income tax officials) had to bring him to his house to check certain documents seized during the searches, Jaitley said.

The Income Tax Joint Commissioner said the searches were in continuation of an investigation going on for considerable time.

He maintained that the timing of the searches was decided well in advance, and that it had nothing to do with the shifting of Gujarat Congress MLAs to Karnataka.

The Congress had flown its 44 Gujarat lawmakers from Ahmedabad on July 29 and lodged them in the Eagleton resort at Bidadi, 30 km from Bengaluru, to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from poaching them ahead of the Rajya Sabha poll.

The resort is located in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Congress legislator D.K. Suresh, younger brother of Shivakumar, a lawmaker from the Kanakapura assembly segment in the district.

The Congress alleged political vendetta by the BJP-led NDA government and forced repeated adjournments of the Rajya Sabha which wound up business much ahead of schedule because of continued slogan shouting by Congress members in the house.

Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the government agencies were being used to terrorise people just ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.

"What is happening in this country? This house as well as the Election Commission will have to ensure free and fair elections," Azad said.

Congress leader Anand Sharma raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha as soon as the house met for the day.

"For the past few days we have been raising our grave concerns about the attempt to derail and hijack elections to the council of states by abusing state power. Today (Wednesday) I-T raids were conducted against a Congress minister at the resort where our MLAs are staying," Sharma said.

In the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the government was using central agencies against opposition leaders.

"In Gujarat, there is election for three Rajya Sabha seats. The Congress had 57 members and support of four others, but they (BJP) broke away five members," Kharge alleged.

"Now they are using the I-T department on our MLAs from Gujarat, who are in a resort in Karnataka. The Income Tax Department is being used to threaten them as well as a Minister of Karnataka," Kharge said, as members from the treasury benches raised their pitch in protest.

Jaitley denied the allegations. "In that resort where your MLAs are staying, no search has taken place. No MLA has been searched. A particular individual was to be searched. He had parked himself at the resort. The resort is certainly not an immune area," Jaitley said.

Sharma said the timing of the raids was significant. Jaitley quipped that whether it is use or abuse of authorities will depend upon recoveries.

Bengaluru: Raids only on D K Shivakumar, not on resort hosting Cong MLAs, say I-T officials

Bengaluru, Aug 2 (Agencies): The Income Tax Department on Wednesday conducted searches at multiple locations in Karnataka and Delhi related to Karnataka Energy Minister DK Shivakumar, who is hosting 44 Congress MLAs from Gujarat at a resort near Bengaluru, in connection with a tax evasion probe case.

Officials privy to the early morning raids said a team of I-T sleuths has also reached the Eagleton resort near Bengaluru to question the minister, who was staying at the resort for the night.

"The resort is not being raided," the officials said. A total of 39 premises of the minister and his family are being raided by a team of about 120 Income Tax Department officials with the aid of central paramilitary forces, they said.

Earlier, reports suggested that the Income Tax department conducted raids at the resort too.

The department is also investigating charges of alleged role of money power and huge transfer of illegal funds for these polls.

Shivakumar, is hosting his party's MLAs from Gujarat who have been brought to the Bengaluru resort till the day of the Rajya Sabha elections on August 8.

Congress gets I-T shock: Raids at Bengaluru resort, residences, offices of DKS, others

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Aug 2: In a development that has come as a shock for Congress party in general and chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, in particular, a large team of income (I-T) officials descended on Eagleton Resort at Bidadi where 44 Gujarat Congress MLAs have been accommodated. The raid began at 7 am on Wednesday August 2.

The I-T sleuths have also simultaneously raided residences, offices and other premises of state energy minster, D K Shivakumar, in whose name the rooms in the resort are booked, and who has been hosting the MLAs. The residence of Shivakumar in Sadashivanagara and his room in the resort are among the places raided. The premises of his brother, D K Suresh, who is an MP, at Kanakapura and of a close aide of Shivakumar named C S Ravi, who is an MLC, were also raided.

It may be noted that Shivakumar was in charge of hospitality for all Congress Gujarat MLAs staying in Bengaluru.

"Yes, raids are underway at the Minister's house and the resort. Our teams have gone to search the places," a senior tax officer told IANS on condition of anonymity.

"As the searches are on, we cannot give details now. We are not authorised to brief media about such things. Our officers will brief," added the official.

Two officials have been allotted to each room, and the officers are being provided protection by CRPF personnel. Vehicles moving out of the resort are being subjected to thorough verification, it is learnt.

Congress MLAs from Gujarat have beeen staying at Eagleton Resort since July 28 as per the plan of Congress leadership who have accused BJP of engaging in horse trading, in order to ensure victory of Congress candidate, Ahmed Patel, as Rajya Sabha member. This election is to be held on August 8.

It is said that this unexpected raid has angered chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, who has termed the crackdown as undemocratic. Siddaramaiah held discussions with Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Dr G Parameshwara on this development.

Condemning the raids, MP Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, hit out at the BJP and tweeted, "BJP is on an unprecedented witch-hunt just to win one Rajya Sabha seat...After using the state machinery and every other agency, these I-T raids show their utter desperation & frustration."

If Janardhan reddy can escape and live like a king outside the jail anyone can . DKS companies employ ore then 1000 families and all will suffer if they close down so govt should think of the deeper impact and if they want to really stop corrruption do it propoerly . IT dept gets approval from Comissioner and then goes ahead.

Whole purpose of raid will be defeated, if the accussed is informed..

as for the logic of DKS employing hundreds of people, the same logic applied when janardhan reddy was arrested, isnt it?...didnt see many of you complaining then...rather many were happy...

During the period of demonetization Janadrdhana Reddy conducted his daughter wedding with an whooping expenditure of 500 crores, that to coming out of parole. Did any IT raid was conducted at that time ? But Poor citizens where standing in que for getting 5000 Rs from bank during the above period.

Secondly 3 incidents in a row, shows ruling party utilizing their power for dirty politics:

    a) IT Raid at Lalu Prasad yadav and his sons house prior to President election to get Nithish Kumar in their line, get Bihar rule and also more margin win in President election.

    b) CBI Raid at founder NDTV chairman Prannoy Roy's residence after NDTV anchor had an on-air verbal tiff with BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.

    c) Now IT Raid at D.k Shivakumar properties prior to Rajyasabha polls and Karnataka election.

Above politician may or maynt be corrupt but they are into politics since many years, but timming of IT Raid clearly indicates that ruling party is missusing goverment officials.

BJP's main sponsor for 'operation Kamala' in the erstwhile government of former CM Yeddyurappa who was out on bail from jail who offered Rs 100 crores to the Judge who later found dead, had extravaganza wedding of worth Rs500 crores his daughter in the middle of the 'Demonetisation' drive when whole of India queuing outside banks for new currency.
There were no IT raids on 'Bellary republic' on his Kingdom nor any raids on Vijay Mallya liquor ventures for defaulting loans.
BJP's absolute misuse of central power for its own political benefit. The show will continue till Aug 8 when BJP ensures Congress don't have enough strength in Rajya Sabha to defeat Ahmed Patel.
If BJP is honest about corruption they would have acted in full strength against Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj singh Chauhan in 'Vyapam ' and Chhattisgarh CM Dr. Raman Singh in PDS scam. IT,ED, CRPF..... lose strength when the BJP ruled states or its elected representative found in corruption.
Political ambition of BJP has already murders former CM Jayalalitha in conspiracy, weakening Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and arm twisting YSR Reddy in Andhra Pradesh and now in Karnataka to win Rajya Sabha seat.

One more nail on the coffin of Congress. Congress is like Cowboy take the gun and shoot their own legs. If minister is not corrupt, how can he stash 5 crore cash. If the minister is honest and sincere, let him prove it to NIA and probably he will be acquainted from corruption and he can run for election. Probably this is the reason why the so called minority support Congress for their own cause. But we want a corrupt free govt. be it Congress or be it BJP or somebody else. Corruption has to stop in Karnataka. Worth checking Siddu and Moily as well. R. Rai could be next one hence he missed his home minister post.

All politicians with ill-gotten wealth, whichever party they belong to, should be raided and their wealth confiscated. It is well known that some of the corrupt politicians own engineering and medical colleges, transport companies and other thriving businesses. Theses businesses prosper when their party is in the government. I welcome the government's decision to raid Shivkumar's residence and would like stern action to be taken against him. However, at the same time they should not spare the likes of Yeddyurappa, Shobha, Renukacharya, C.K.Ravi and all those who are in this long list.

There is no place for corruption in the opposition parties. However, there seems to be plenty of place for corruption in the ruling party and their allies. Therefore, maximum use of government agencies like caged parrots etc. must be made to work overtime all the time against the opposition. How else to ensure that one stays in power or grabs power from the other ? Simple - maximise your own wealth and minimise the wealth of the opposition. Money power is crucial for winning elections - buying voters, buying legislators, buying parliamentarians etc.
