Udupi, Aug 21: In a dramatic incident in the city, two young men snatched away a purse from the hand of a woman tourist in the city and took to their heels. The traffic police, in a hot chase, succeeded in taking both into custody in 30 minutes.
The arrested accused happen to be Manohar and Shakilesh, both from Kolalagiri in the taluk. The lady in question, identified as Jamuna from Bengaluru, was among the tourists who had come in a bus to Srikrishna Math here on Sunday. After paying obeisance to the deity, she was crossing the parking spot at Rajangana of the Math to board her bus, when the youngsters suddenly appeared from nowhere, forcibly took away a purse she held, and ran away. They then escaped in a vehicle.
An auto rickshaw driver at the spot immediately conveyed this information to traffic police. A traffic police constable, Shivappa, began to chase the two in his motor bike as the thieves fled through Kalsanka, Ambagilu and cornered them at LV temple at Puttur near here. When keeping an eye on the thieves, he conveyed information to traffic police assistant sub-inspector, Prakash, and Raju. Prakash and Raju went to the spot in an auto rickshaw and brought both the thieves to the town police station here.
A cellphone worth Rs 15,000 and Rs 3,000 in cash found inside the purse were returned to the true owner.
