Mangaluru, Aug 29: Coastal areas and districts adjoining them received heavy rainfall on Monday August 28. While Madikeri and Agumbe received nine cm of rain each, Sullia got seven cm rain, with most other areas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district registering between five and seven cm of rainfall.

Heavy rain in Sullia claimed the life of an old man. Kabbu (75), who lived at Korattikaje near Goliyadka school in Markanja village in the taluk. At around 3 pm on Monday, Kabbu visited the shed near his home when all of a sudden poles holding the shed gave way and the entire shed came crashing on him, crushing him under its weight. Tahsildar, Ganesh, revenue inspector, Avin Rabngattamale and Sullia police visited the spot. A few other houses also collapsed in the taluk due to heavy rain.

Hosmat bridge near Kadaba on the way to Subrahmanya submerged in water after water level in Gundia rivulet rose. Due to this development, traffic on Uppinangady-Subrahmanya state highway was thrown out of gear. Safety gates on both sides of the bridge stand closed. A little earlier, Bilinele bridge on Kadaba-Subrahmanya state highway also went under flood water. This affected movement of vehicles between Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya. Bettampady bridge in Sullia also submerged due to heavy rain. Traffic also was blocked after Seere rivulet on Patte-Ishwaramangala Road near Puttur swelled and water submerged adjoining road.

Traffic jams became order of the day in Udupi and Mangaluru where roads were inundated due to overflowing drains. Pot holes in Udupi posed further problems as vehicles had to tread in standing water cautiously.

The meteorological department has predicted good rainfall in coastal area and adjoining places during the next 24 hours coupled with thunder.
