Mangaluru, Sep 7: Aiming to put back smiles on faces of women and children who have lost their hair because of cancer, St Agnes College Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in association with Bliss Professional Unisex Salon is organising ‘Locks of Love’.

The hair donation drive which will be held on September 10 at Forum Fiza Mall, invites Mangalureans to partake in the noble cause.

“Love is in the hair. Why waste beautiful hair when it can bring back smiles on the faces of women and children,” says Nishamitha Rai, student coordinator of Locks of Love.

Most of the time, the hair which is cut in the salon is thrown away. However, very few know that one can donate hair to make wigs, which can be used by people who have lost hair due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, burns and other medical issues.

According to the National Health Registry, breast cancer accounts for 27 per cent of cancers in women in India. The drive aims to create awareness and collect hair which will be donated to Sargakshetra, an NGO which distributes free wigs for the needy, she adds.

“This is the first time Bliss is involving in a drive like this. The drive will start on September 10 and continued even in future. Whoever wishes to donate hair can come to the Salon,” says Bliss Professional Unisex Salon Proprietor Nazeefa Aysha.

“The entire initiative is student driven and they are toiling hard since a month to make it possible,” says St Agnes College Department of Journalism and Mass Communication HOD Lakshmi Shenoy. The students are organizing flash mobs, awareness talks at different venues and also campaigns on social media and whatsapp, she adds.

Lakshmi says that the Journalism Department at St Agnes was started this year and she is proud to have an enthusiastic bunch of students who want to make a difference in the society. The students have also started a unique initiative #womenatwork which tries to reach out to women from different professions. Most of the time, efforts of working women go unnoticed. The initiative aims to bring the same into mainstream, she adds.

Whoever wishes to donate hair can visit Forum Fiza Mall on September 10. The initiative will begin from 10 am. The minimum hair length for donations should be 6 inches and should not be dyed, bleached or coloured. The hair must be clean, shampooed and not oily.
