Thiruvananthapuram: What I went through had a purpose - Abducted priest Fr Tom Uzhunnalil

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 15 (PTI): Kerala priest Tom Uzhunnalil, recently freed after being abducted by Islamic militants 18 months ago, has said what he went through "definitely had a purpose" as he thanked all those who helped in his release.

In his first video message after being released on September 12, Father Uzhunnalil said he was "happy, strong in mind and soul" though he needed to recuperate.

"I am sure God will put me back to whatever mission he wants...He has a purpose in our life," the Salesian priest is heard saying in the message from the Vatican, where he is recovering after being freed.

"What I went through definitely had a purpose. I have received the prayers and love of you all. He has ultimately answered. I am free," he said in the video being telecast by local news channels.

He said he was fine and had no major illnesses, other than diabetes. "I have been happy, strong in mind and soul. Still I need a little more recuperation from my physical weaknesses...No major illness, other than my diabetes," he said.

He said he was grateful to God and to everybody for their love, concern and prayers. "God is great. His love is everlasting and his mercy definite. May God bless each of you and all those involved in making this day possible," he said.

The Catholic Church, political leaders and family members of Father Uzhunnalil had earlier thanked the governments of India and Oman for the efforts taken to secure his release. Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) President and Major Archbishop of Syro Malankara church Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos and Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, CBCI Secretary General, said the church was grateful to the government of India and all concerned for the steps taken to secure his release.

Father Uzhunnalil, who belongs to Bharananganam in Pala in Kottayam, was abducted from the port city of Aden after the terror group attacked a care home run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity. There were several video messages from him after the incident, asking for help. He was rescued from captivity in Yemen on September 12 and then flown to the Vatican.

Dr.Vincent Paul, Indira Nagar. Bangalore... FYI, Father Tom was released because of request from Vatican to Oman's government. So the truth is Father Tom was released because of Oman government's help. Your madam Sushma Swaraj did nothing just nothing that's it, If she was involved in getting him released then it would have happened long back it would have not taken 18 months so please stop giving credit to them, beside that Modi did not give any them to Kuwait/Oman/Bahrain as if they are not India's friend, he just went to visit to UAE/SAUDI/QATAR coz they are rich.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil is back home. Praise The Lord. What an attitude on the part of this Holy Priest to say that the Good Lord had a purpose for his going through this ordeal. While through this torture what an attitude to feel that for everything that happens there is a purpose.

Father Tom - you are a Role Model to many. May you do well in your mission. May The Good Lord bless you and help you in everything that you do.

I consider it mean to politicise the issue and deprive the Indian government of the credit in this unfortunate episode - especially the role of our Foreign Minister. Let us not be petty and parochial.

It is true that the Sultan of Oman succeeded in getting Fr Tom freed. But let us not underestimate the efforts of the Indian government. There are many who try to cut a strong rope but after putting lot of pressure the last one succeeds. Everyone contributes towards the desired goal

Government of India did not do anything for Rescuing Fr.Tom Uzhunnalil..
😰All negotiations done directly by Vatican through Oman Govt..😰*
    Read Oman Govt Letter.

*Thank God that Rev. Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil is finally released and reached Oman in a spl Royal Airforce, Oman flight.*
Fr. Tom was in Muscat royal palace today. There is report that Fr. Tom is taken to Rome in a special charter flight few minutes before. He was abducted in 2016 April by IS terrorists from Yemen. The Salesian priest hails from Ramapuram, Palai in Kerala. Indian External affairs Minister confirmed this news by a tweet. (Photo of Fr. Tom after the release inside Oman palace, released by Oman Observer tweet today.)
Read this official release by Oman govt. *There is no mention about Indian Government.* -- "In response to the Royal Orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and as per a request from the Vatican to assist in the rescuing of a Vatican employee, the concerned authorities in the Sultanate, in coordination with the Yemeni authorities, have managed to find a Vatican government employee.
He was transferred this morning to Muscat in preparation for his return home," the Oman government said in a statement online.
Tom Uzhunnalil expressed his thanks to God Almighty and to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and wished him good health and wellness. He also thanked his brothers, sisters and all relatives and friends who prayed for his safety and release," the statement said.

*Do not Believe BJP Governments Claim that they were behind for Rescue.*

    *Thank God..Hallelujah in the Highest*
