Mangaluru: Hit by ambulance, pedestrian gets killed

Mangaluru, Oct 2: A pedestrian, Tilak Shettigar (55), was killed after an ambulance knocked him down near Tadambail, Suratkal on national highway 66 on Sunday October 1.

Shettigar, a resident of Tadambail near Suratkal, was employed in the gardening section of NITK Suratkal. On Sunday, he had taken part in a programme organized in the auditorium of of the institute. After lunch, he was crossing the road at around 2.30 pm, when an ambulance that was speeding by hit him hard. Tilak Shettigar, who suffered grave injuries, succumbed when being taken to hospital.

Shettigar is survived by wife and only son.

Police personnel from Suratkal said that railings had been installed all through the road divider from NITK to Suratkal town to avoid accidents happening because of pedestrians crossing the road at unscheduled spots but the people continue to cross the highway at different spots to suit their individual conveniences, and thus giving rise to accidents.

A case about this accident was registered in traffic (north) police station at Suratkal.

    Plz don't judge that he is drunk... He is little physical challenged.. he can't walk how u walk normally... Don't come to the conclusion by urself and comment senseless ly unless u know who he is n wat he is... He saw properly while crossing road he could see Oly car was coming from far distance so he thought he can cross safely.. unfortunately ambulance overtook the car and hit... Ambulance driver accepts his mistake and he is guilty as well... The person who v lost is my mama.. he has good name in the society plz don't spoil it...

    A lot has to be done in this nation, but, it has to begun with every individual, we as people of this nation are very indisciplined,in every matter of our day to day living and then blame the authorities when untoward incidents takes place, most recent of this is the tragedy that happened in Mumbai last week. We boasts of carrying expensive gadgets, expensive clothes, shopping in malls, lavish banquets, super luxury cars, but the behaviour is disgusting, spitting, littering, talking loudly with offensive/abusive language.
    The only good thing we do is express our patriotic sentiments when we are abroad waving our national flag and dancing on national days to show our patriotism. Watch the people during cricket matches abroad, those NRI's behaving like the care for their fellow national, they never acknowledge, proud and arrogant.
    In this accident it clear that safety measures were in place. As for the ambulance, yes they should be thoroughly investigated, for, ambulances are more used to transport the family members of the owners for weddings and parties than carrying patients

    I just crossed this man a few seconds back when this happened.... The man looked drunk... If he wasn't drunk then I feel the ambulance driver is fully responsible

    RIP Tilak,

    Something have to be done about rules and regulations of highways. The Speed Of Private buses , driving on wrong side of the road, crossing the road without looking at both sides.

    I have seen so many times people just casually walk and cross the road, which is very risky

    Extra care must be taken while crossing the road. Watch both sides as not many drivers follow rules and regulations.
