Udupi, Jun 24: Atul Rao, who is largely perceived to be a key which can unlock mystery behind the death of MLA Raghupaty Bhat's wife Padmapriya, was remanded to police custody for seven days till June 30.  Earlier he was produced in the court before the civil judge A M Ramchandraiah.

Though the police had made an official request to hand over Atul to their custody for 15 days, Court granted only seven days' custody which will end on Monday June 30. Court also asked the police to consult doctor if Atul complains about health problems and present the medical report during the next hearing.

Stephen Victor Lewis, junior lawyer with practicing advocate Purushottam Poojary of Mangalore contested on behalf of Atul Rao.   Senior assistant government prosecutor Jayavant Vasant Rao Nayak contested on behalf of government.

Large number of people gathered at the court hall when Atul was produced in the court on Tuesday. As the police were taking Atul Rao towards their vehicle from the court, BJP activists who were waiting at the campus hurled slogans against him.

Atul Rao is only a scapegoat in this entire drama. The person who should have been arrested is Raghupathi Bhat. Nobody believes that Atul Rao has anything to do with Padmapriya's death, except that he may have helped her to run away from Ragupathi Bhat.

Don't be surprised if Atul is done away with just to save Raghupathi Bhats skin and quietly say that he committed suicide just like Padmapriya. That is today's politics for you.

"BJP activists who were waiting at the campus hurled slogans against him (Atul)"! Whether BJP activists [under the influence of its Home Minister, VS Achari & MLA, Raghupati Bhat] are also involved in abetting Padmapriya's suicide, is an aspect to be looked into by investigating agency. CBI investigation is the best option to unravel the mystery.
