Mangalore: Successful Autorickshaw Strike Pegs Normal Life in City

Mangalore, Jun 24: The 24-hour strike by city autorickshaws pegged normal life to a great extent in city on Tuesday June 24. The strike that began at 12 midnight on Monday June 23 was successful.

Autorickshaw union leaders under the leadership of Ivan D'Souza submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner and urged to hike minimum auto fare following steep rise in petrol prices.

On the other hand, people who are totally dependent on autos for their routine visits to the office, for dropping children to schools etc., faced lot of problem. People who reached the city from various places through trains, buses etc., since early morning were caught unawares and had to hire cars and taxies by paying hefty hire charges to reach their destinations. City buses as a result, were found to be overcrowded and people were also seen walking long distances to reach the desired places.

In the meantime, it is learnt that the deputy commissioner and the regional transport officer have invited leaders of the autorickshaw unions for a dialogue today for a discussion on their demands.

    Today every tom,dick & harry wants a hike in every busssiness whether it is justified or not. The strike called by auto drivers just caused problems to common man. A good holiday given by their the leader Ivan. I am sure most of the drivers must have drunk and slept & they donot have a clue why the strike was for.

    Mr.Ivan - is this is the political gimics !! central government is already smashed the public and you are burrying the Mangaloreans, first of all all the Auto drivers are charging Rs.2/- extra on the usual Rs.11/- so is this was necessary.. you were the candidiate for the Mangalore, dont you have pitty towards the middle class Mangaloearns ???

    Increase in fare may be sanctioned.But Autos should never refuse any destination at any time and should not over charge the passengers. Every Auto should display board, for the type of fuel it uses. Whether it is CNG, Diesel or Petrol and the fare should be fixed with tariff card for each type by the authority. CNG auto driver should not take Petrol rate from the passengers. Looting is not good.

    The Karnataka Government should permit KSRTC and private buses to ply to and from KSRTC bus stand, airport and railway stations even in the nights. There are Government buses plying to and from airport even in rich countries like Kuwait without any extra charges for luggage. If not, the auto drivers will continue to make life miserable for the passengers.

    I adivse you Ivan your increase of auto fare should meet exisiting market factors : cost of living, wage of drivers/employee pay, cost of running auto (investment & mentainance and inflation. If all issues taken care then you are justified. If this initiative is politically motivated for self-interest then you are making a mistake.

    Before getting into strike the responsibles should have thought of ordinary people who totally depend on auto rickshow.People elect political leaders to support them in their needs and not to make situations bad. whats happend is really bad....................

    The 24 hrs strike by the autorickshaw had affected the common man who were entirely dependent on the autos. There was no need for a 24 hrs strike just to submit a memorandumto the DC for the hike in fare. The leadership was taken by Ivan. Just few months back he went to the people to elect him as their representative and today the same people have to suffer from the strike. In the larger interest of the common man he could have used his good office to avert a strike, approach the authorities and solve the issue of fare hike with out any problems

    Ivan, having submitted a memorandum asking for a hike in minimum fare, I hope you have not forgotten to mention that the auto drivers will not overcharge passengers at nigths, especially at railway station and bus stand??
