Mangalore to Be Represented in Beijing Olympics

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 29: Machettira Raju Pooavamma, a 18 year old girl from Mangalore will be a member of the 4x400 metres Indian relay team that will take part in Beijing olympics set to be staged later this year. The girl alongwith Satti Geetha, Chitra and Mandeep Kaur will make the relay foursome. The team, by clocking 3:28:29 in the second meet of the Asian Grand Prix, sealed their birth in the olympics. This relay squad has been putting up stellar performances in all the races held in the Asian GP.

Poovamma's coach Dinesh Kunder informed, that the Indian relay squad won two gold medals in the Asian GP  held at Bangkok and Korat in Thailand. The squad bettered it's timing by four seconds at Korat as compared to it's earlier performance at Bangkok. Poovamma is a student of the city based Sri Dharmastala Manjunateshwara College of Business Management.

Poovamma's brilliance came to the fore when she won the bronze medal in the Asian junior meet in 4x400 metres category, held at Macau, China in the year 2005.  She had also won the gold at the SAF Games held in Colombo in 2006. Poovamma also won thebronze medal in the 400 metres race at the Asian Grand Prix held at Bangkok in 2006 and again one more bronze in the Asian Indoor Meet held in Macau in 2007.  She will have one more chance to prove her mettle in the final leg of the Asian GP to be held in Hanoi on Monday, June 30.

Raju, father of Poovamma says, that he did not have much hope about Poovamma's chances. Himself and Poovamma's mother Jaji and brother Manju are full of praise of Poovamma for making the best of the opportunity that came her way. Kunder is hopeful, that he would be allowed to accompany his ward for the olympics trip and is sure, that Poovamma's future in the area of athletics will be long lasting and extremely fruitful.

Congrats Poovama for being selected to represent India for the Beijing Olympics 2008. As a Mangalorean I feel proud to find an athlete from my home town representing India in Olympics after a gap 24 years (Vandana Rao represented Los Angeles in 1984).

I will not be wrong in giving a chunk of this credit to her coach Mr. Dinesh Kunder. Not much has been told about him but he has worked selflessly & honorary for years by Identifying, Training & Supporting young Athletes of Mangalore who have participated and won medals in national and international levels.

As on today Mr. Dinesh Kunder has produced 22 National and 4 International athletes. With an achievement of this magnitude I don’t think there should be any hitch in allowing him to accompany Poovama for the Olympics ………I wish them all the best.

True to your name, I bet all Mangaloreans will soon get a great opportunity to greet you with handful of Flowers (Phoo….means flowers) when you will be able to triumphantly return after the Beijing Olympics.

I hope fragrance of this great Flower (Phoo) will fill the air at the Beijing Stadium and its aroma will enchant the hundreds and thousands of spectators present cheering up all the way when you and your colleagues will set a blazing trail of your relay race…and we are confident that you will win the race.

I am sure greats like Vandana Rao and Irene Saldanha too will join me in Wishing you All the Best for the event.

Congratulations !! Poovamma. Its been a long time since we have had any quality athlete from Mangalore representing India. I can only remember Anand Shetty and Vandana Rao in the early eighties who did Mangalore proud.

Please accept the good wishes of all Mangaloreans, and we are sure that your determination which has brought you so far will take you places in the days ahead.

Congrats Poovamma ! It is heartening to know about Poovamma's trip to Beijing Olympics as a member of the Indian women's relay team. At this point, I can say safely that there are so many like Poovamma who can be picked and pruned to bring glory for India. Especially, the huge villages in India have robust and tough athletes who can outrun and outperform those performers from the urban areas. The only difference is that the facilities provided in the rural regions are limited and few. If the government sends more coaches to the villages there will be many promising stars who can be picked and fine tuned to perfection. I have always stressed the natural talent that is in abundance especially in our villages. As soon as we have the right infrastructure to tap this talent, we can start counting our medals earlier than expected. One wishes Poovamma a great time in Beijing when she tries her best to outpace her competitors. Good luck !
