Udupi, Nov 28: Animal rights activist and president of the World Animal Welfare Board Dayanand Swamiji on Tuesday November 28 expressed his disappoinment with the central government's failure to ban export of meat.
Addressing a press meet, Dayanand Swamiji said, "We had pinned our hopes on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would ban meat export. But he has failed to do so. BJP came to power with the aim of preserving Indian culture. It has taken many measures, but has not banned export of meat.
"We want the government to ban export of all types of meat and not only beef. Even the Supreme Court on March 29, 2016 had ordered the central government to ban meat export. When BJP came to power, we hoped that it would enforce the ban, but it has failed," he said.
He further condemned the practice of animal sacrifice in temples. He criticised the action of chief minister Siddaramaiah of withdrawing the ‘Karnataka Cow Slaughter Prohibition Act 1964’.
"Siddaramaiah took oath as chief minister on the day of Basava Jayanti. Basavanna was against cow slaughter. Siddaramaiah took oath on his birthday, but did not follow Basavanna and immediately withdrew the bill," he said.
Swamiji demanded the state government to pass the bill once again and to take strict measures for the prevention of cow slaughter. "Our protest is not against any religion. We are concerned about animals and want to save them from being slaughtered," said Swamiji.
