Udupi: Atul Rao shifted to Mangalore Jail

Udupi, Jul 5: Udupi district chief judicial magistrate Ramachandraiah issued orders on Friday July 4, asking the jail authorities to shift Atul Rao, accused in Padmapriya death case, to the district jail, Mangalore.
Meera Rao, Atul's wife, had submitted a petition to the court, praying for orders to shift her husband from the Udupi sub-jail to a hospital outside Udupi district. Placing his arguments before the magistrate against the petition, special public prosecutor G V Naik said that the application should have been made by the accused himself and that the wife's petition in this respect should not be entertained. The court however, thought otherwise.

While pronouncing the said order, the magistrate also asked the jail superintendent to provide all necessary medical treatment to Atul Rao at any of the hospitals of his choice, at his own cost. It took cognizance of a report filed by the Udupi sub-jail superintendent Venkatramanana Ballal about an altercation that took place at the jail on Wednesday, July 2 and his request to shift Rao out of the sub-jail.
Naushad Kashim who appeared on behalf of Atul said that the accused was a chronic asthma patient and that his life was under threat in Udupi. He based his argument on the base of a Supreme Court ruling that said that no accused should be denied medical treatment and every accused person has the right to get treated for health problems.
